311085 2005-01-06 02:14:00 I'm after a new laptop for work, going for $3000 to $3500 - need help finding the right one.

The minimum requirements I have are as follows. The main reason for the graphics card is that the comp will also house a couple of game installations that I'd like to see at a decent framerate and detail (games like battlefield and MOH)

- grunty chip (not too worried about battery life, and no qualms with amd either)
- 15" screen min (weight/size not really an issue either)
- 512MB ram
- 60GB hdd
- decent vid card with dedicated memory
- DVD/CDRW combo (DVD writer not reqd but a bonus)
- 100M network card (wireless networking a bonus)
- XP Home (Pro a bonus)
- tv out a bonus

On the work side of things, there'll be a fair bit of paintshop pro graphical editing (no real video editing), and constantly multiple mem-hungry programs all running at once.

Would prefer not to have a whole bunch of crappy manufacturer programs all pre-loaded

Do you have any suggestions in terms of models, retailers, bits and pieces?

Any help will be much appreciated,

Darren

311088 2005-01-06 03:10:00 We're in Chch but am happy to buy from reputable stores elsewhere in NZ. I don't know if anyone does interest-free deals on pc's at all, but that would certainly help our decision... Spartacus (3313)
311089 2005-01-06 03:14:00 Hmm.....I don't know the retailers in that country, Pretty sure some locals posts here though. Metla (12)
311090 2005-01-06 03:24:00 Thanks for the suggestion Metla - had seen the Asus in the current PCWorld and it certainly caught my eye. It's been a matter of convincing the boss that there are better deals than spending 3k from the dell catalogue...

Who sells Asus? I know Ascent have it for something around $3,300. Do Asus machines tend to have a decent reputation?

311092 2005-01-06 04:42:00 Asus have a very good reputation,

Im using one right now.

But then, I sell em so im as biased as one can get.

Although I speciffcily chose ASUS as the brand to sell.......
