311423 2005-01-10 09:15:00 Before I did anything else, I would check on the makers website, to make sure there are no XP sp2 issues. I had to get 'another' printer to print at the weekend, and by going straight to the manufacturers site, canon, it told me there were sp2 issues, and how to fix them. Just a thought. supergran (108)
311424 2005-01-10 09:20:00 Yes, I understand. I guess since no one asked for the information, it didn't occur to me that it was needed. Here is what I got:

Dell Computer Corporation
Dell OPTIPLEX GX270
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40 GHz
2.39 GHz, 512 MB of RAM

Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Maybe this will help?

311425 2005-01-11 09:49:00 Ok, as Goddie has said, do you have the Dell CD? It should be chock full of goodies including mother board sound, graphics and USB bus controller drivers or some such .

If your unlucky enough to have a Dell which has all this stuff tucked away on a hidden partition on the hardrive, instead of a CD, you'll have to go through some sort of recovery procedure to get to what you want .

What you may also want to do it to go into Control Panel > System, choose the Hardware tab then hit the Device button > scroll down to the bottom and expand the + next to the USB Serial Bus Controllers (assuming they're the same in XP as win2k), and uninstall whatever drivers are listed there by right clicking and choosing Unistall or better still Properties and have a look at what it says about the health of the device and what drivers it's using .

Or you could just fire up your browser and point it at the Dell site and download a whole new set of Chipset/Motherboard drivers, although I think it's better you use the approved Dell recovery/troubleshooting procedure first, ie, what it says in The Dell Manual .

311426 2005-01-11 10:36:00 install the drivers cd that came with the camera...... all digital cameras come with a drivers cd for transferring the pics to pc. my own digital camera.. plugged it into the usb port of my pc and same thing "cant install the software" etc etc.. installed the drivers that came with the digital camera and voila.. camera detected and then the pics could be transferred.

my ongoing fortnightly 2 cents worth :p

311427 2005-01-26 14:19:00 I know where the problem is, yet I dont know the answer for this .

I am trying to install several hardware items in this computer, at work . . .
so far, the IEEE 1394 (firewire) and the modem have the same problem ("Cannot Install This Hardware - The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software . ")

This all started when my windows XP automatically "updated" to SP2 . Along with this problem, I could not access any network place on my LAN . I had to dig into google to fix that and eventually I came to a patch called "WinsockXPFix . exe", so I solved the network issue .

I'd like there was some kind of fix to the hardware wizard issue, since it seems I can't install any new hardware due to SP2 .

I hope this helps . Well, at least it could help to known who's the enemy here . Oh Bill why do you do this to us :)

Well, I have to go on searching on this . . . cya later!

311428 2005-01-26 17:01:00 I have had much the same problem as you, but not with a camera . Mine was with a printer .
"OTHER DEVICES" in device manager, (usualy with yellow ?) This means "I know you've got something there, but I haven't a clue what it is . "
Deleting this won't work . Windows will just find it again next boot .

If you click on "Search for drivers" Click on Not this time when windows wants to search the web . The you should get a page that mentions what the new Hardware is .

Some "NEW" hardware comes with win 98 drivers only . Usualy wont work with XP .

Fire Wire can cause a lot of trouble . If you have it and don't need it . Disconnect it in CMos .

Everytime I plug in a USB-related device into my computer, the "Found New Hardware Wizard" starts up . Do you mean any USB device or just camera?
If it's just camera then it would seem to be a driver problem with your camera . Remove everything associated with camera . Check "Add or remove programs" in control panel and remove any Camera program that may be installed .
Then try to install it again . Use "install new hardware" in control panel . Plug in your Camera first . Let it search for new hardware . If it doesn't find any go to next page and select "I will select" and steer it to your CD and the drivers you want .
MAKE SURE you select the drivers for XP . If you don't have XP drivers you will never get it to work .

311429 2005-01-26 19:46:00 Most USB devices need the software to be installed prior to the installation of the hardware, If their sequence of (twain) driver/software installation is not done correctly they can be very grumpy. Read the manual for your particular device, follow the instructions exactly.

Cameras are often seen as mass storage devices by the OS, however, some prefer to be Twain devices and need their specific twain drivers software to work. Red circles with a bar or yellow excamation marks next to USB host controllers suggests a problem with your motherboard chipset drivers that, must be resolved before anything else.

311430 2006-08-31 01:02:00 I have the exact same problem. I have in front of me a Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard which I had to hook up and install via PS2 connectors. Additionally, I have a Microsoft 3-Button mouse, a very simple USB webcam, a Belkin Nostromo game pad, and an hp printer. I have only tested the Microsoft mouse on my old Dell computer sitting right next to me. When I plug in the mouse, the bubble pops up and says that new hardware has been found, then almost immediately after, it says I'm good to go. Mouse works and everything. If I plug said mouse into this computer, it says that it is detecting new hardware, then says that it is the mouse, then it pops up the Found New Hardware Wizard. From there, I can't get anything installed. The camera, the gaming pad, the mouse, the printer, everything pops up to Found New Hardware Wizard. I know some items won't be on the Microsoft site and the wizard should pop up. But I know the mouse plug and plays just fine on the Dell next to me. pawned79 (6804)
311431 2007-04-25 09:52:00 I get exactly the same problem but clearing the yellow system icons by "uninstalling" them did not work. When computer is rebooted the Install Hardware Wizard starts up again and plays the same game as before. The problem occurs with every new USB2 device I try to install even if I try installing them in USB ports that work fine with existing devices.
Did you have any joy in solving this problem?

Did u try installing the drivers (if whatever the device is, has the drivers on CD), before u plugged the device in??

ie: Install the drivers, if theyre on cd and needed, reboot, then plug the device in?

I've read, with most USB 2 printers, the drivers should be installed, BEFORE u plug the printer in and turn it on, for it to work properly. The same may apply for other USB 2 devices?
