311231 2005-01-06 08:08:00 Last week my friend bought a AMD Athlon XP 2800 system from supercheap computers, (I recommended them as I have never had problems with them) .

The guy there told us that the computer had to be built and that we could pick it up on wednesday . so we came back on wednesday morning and he told us that he wouldnt have the computer until 2pm, and that he had written that on the receipt, but the only thing on the receipt was wednesday .

So we came back at 3pm to be safe and he gave us the comptuer that we then took back to my friends house . The plan was to swap the CPU from this new computer, with an Athlon XP 2000 from another computer .

On opening up the new system, I was surprised to see that whoever had put the HSF on had obviously been drunk or something of the sort; the clip was only half on at one side, and quite a lot of damage/scratching had been done to the CPU socket .

I removed the HSF as I needed to do this anyway, and found that the heatsink pad had no traces of melting at all . Seems the computer was not even tested .

I swapped the CPU's and the 2800 worked fine in the old computer, no worries there - but the next thing was entirely different . After configuring the FSB jumpers, I put the Athlon XP 2000 in the new system, where upon starting it, I was greeted by a nice burning smell :)

Powered down and checked everything, finally took the motherboard out and found that a decent sized track had burnt right off

then I swapped the burnt motherboard with an old ASrock, and the system ran fine (Same RAM, CPU, PSU, HDD, etc) :stare:

If anyone can enlighten me on why the motherboard blew up, please do so!

I would also like to note that the keyboard that had come with the system had a dud Spacebar and B key .

311232 2005-01-06 09:33:00 Well it seems they arent supercheap for the mere novilty of it. Mirddes (10)
311233 2005-01-06 10:30:00 Have you discussed this with Super Cheap PC yet? ~sy~ (95)
311234 2005-01-06 19:30:00 In your haste to start altering the system did you try it to see if it worked OK before touching it. You would have been better off returning it to Supercheap. Now they could blame you for all damage and could you prove otherwise. PaulD (232)
311235 2005-01-06 21:11:00 Under the CGA you have to give the retailer a chance to put it right first. You sdhould have therefore taken it back to SCC first & seen what they did. MartynC (5610)
