311041 2005-01-05 23:08:00 I am quite experienced in Linux and I would like to put a free version on my PC, I have dial-up so downloading is out of the question but I don't mind paying around $20 for it in a shop. I saw a "Linux For Dummies" help book in Whitcoulls which came with a free version of Suse, but I don't want to pay for the book, just the program. Is there a place to get it for free or a small price on CD? Squibler (6465)

311044 2005-01-05 23:41:00 some distro's are not that big, yoper is only ~650, but i cant say much because im on dial up too and some one else downloaded it for me, you could try downloading some yourself, just aslong as you have a download manager and some time beause your wont be able to use your phone line for a while :)

check out trade me, they have some there for a couple of bucks

311045 2005-01-05 23:42:00 I think you will find that the APC ( Australian PC ) magazine also has Fedora Core 3 on this months cover disk which might be worth looking at. The beauty of using Fedora is that one of the moderators ( Jen ) and at least one other forum member are using this distro if you do strike any problems ;) Simply_Si (354)
311046 2005-01-06 01:24:00 If you are a beginner go for or any Fedora distro, should be to hard to find one for around $10 - $20.

A beginners guide isn't a bad idea tho, even with a GUI you still have to use quite abit of command line and the file system is quite diferent to what you would be used to with Windows.

Have fun. :D

311048 2005-01-06 04:57:00 APC certainly has it on the cover disk, but it is a DVD so will need a DVD drive . It has the four iso files so you do need to burn the CD's yourself, which is easy enough using Nero .

Linux Format and other Linux mags usually have one or two distros on them each month and they cost $20 - $30 depending on the mag .

In Wellington at least, Quay Computers sell several distros including Suse for about eight to ten bucks, and Copyleft sell nearly every distro online from somewhere in Dunedin .
