312082 2005-01-08 10:46:00 I have a sony vaio rs630g
ip4 3.2 ht
ASUS Tek comp. inc.
i865/pe/g/i848 chipset
radeon 9200 128
1 gig ram

first question -- what is the fastest ram i can use

second question -- i got program called cup-z
it tells me my aperture size is only 64 mb -- why not 128

third question -- there are four ram slots
first three say ddr-sdram
fourth says ddr2-sdram
what is ddr2
how can i take advantage of it while maintaining duel channel

last question -- some people speake of over clocking
what is over clocking
can i over clock with out dammage
how can i over clock
or can i?

The fastest RAM you can put in is DDR 2. For more info have a look here (download.micron.com)

It used to be said that a bigger AGP aperture size increases performance however this is only true for graphics card with low dedicated memory usually less than 64MB. If you have 128MB on your card I would recommend setting the AGP aperture size to 128MB. If you have problems with that setting then leave it at 64MB. The general rule of thumb here is the more memory you have on your graphics card the smaller you can set your AGP aperture size to. I have a 128MB Radeon 9600XT and my aperture size is set to 128MB as well. I did not notice any significant performance boost setting it higher.

DDR2 is a new RAM standard, it runs at higher frequencies than DDR and also uses a lower voltage. DDR2 also has a higher capacity per chip than DDR... eg it comes in 2GB sticks whereas DDR maxes out @ 1GB. As far as dual channel is concerned I don't think you can use dual channel with DDR2 as you only have 1 DDR2 slot... but don't quote me on that I may be wrong.

last question -- some people speake of over clocking
what is over clocking
Over-clocking is running a processor (CPU or GPU) higher than the OEM settings.

can i over clock with out dammage
Yes you can, but doing this will not provide any significant performance gains unless it's a huge over-clock...but dong that increases the risk of damageto your components. Needless to say going over the fail-safe limits will render your processor to obvious damage. I myself am running a 2.8Ghz Prescott at 3.4Ghz but this was only after extensive testing and research... performace is good but I'm always keeping an eye on temperature and any other abnormal anomalies which may occur.

how can i over clock
With todays motherboards over-clocking can be done in the BIOS, however some boards do require moving jumpers around on the board itself... refer to your motherboard manual for these settings.

or can i?
Check you motherboard manual, most likely you will be able to.

Before over-clocking ask yourself this...

- Do I really need to over-clock my CPU?
- If I over-clock am I willing to take the risks associated with doing this?

You could end up damaging you CPU and/or other components which in turn could mean you'd have to fork more $$$ to replace damaged parts.

Hope that helps

cheers

312084 2005-01-08 21:14:00 how do i chage the aperture size

can i put ddr ram into the ddr2 slot

312085 2005-01-08 21:16:00 as far as the ddr ram is concerned what is the fastest i can use reefer4411 (6823)
312086 2005-01-08 21:41:00 how do i chage the aperture size
In your bios there should be an entry for AGP aperture size, so just go into the BIOS settings and change the value there.

can i put ddr ram into the ddr2 slot
I don't think you can, as DDR2 runs off a different voltage... I'm no expert on this... all I did was Google a bit to see what I can come up with, but yeah I would say that you probably woudn't be able to stick DDR into the DDR2 slot. Also I don't think you will be able to run DDR and DDR2 together.

Why do you want to change or use DDR2 are you aware that it is more expensive. Looking at your current specs I would say that you would buy a 1GB stick of DDR2 and that's gonna set you back a bit of $$$.

If all you want is a memory upgrade stick with the DDR RAM and add an extra 1GB or 512MB chip you will still be running in dual channel mode.

as far as the ddr ram is concerned what is the fastest i can use
The fastest you can get is DDR400 (PC3200) it runs at 400Mhz, it's quite easy on the budget as you can pick up a 512MB stick for bout $130 - $150 if not less, just shop around.

Hope that helps

cheers

312087 2005-01-08 21:48:00 Actually, i Can get drr 500 ram, in 512 sticks, they are a lot more expensive than ddr 400 tho. ILikeLinux (1669)
312088 2005-01-08 22:37:00 To use any type of duel channel memory you need two sticks of ram that are the same , since DDr2 is faster etc then ddr1 you wont be able to put any ddr2 in duel channel as it could create bottle necks ( cause its faster etc ). noone (22)
312089 2005-01-08 23:16:00 how do access my bios to change the aperature
( i am not dumd but i usually dont fool around with this type of stuff)
reefer4411 (6823)
312090 2005-01-08 23:37:00 would running 1gig in ddr2 be better than 1 gig in drr duel channel (no cost factor)
futher more, like a fool i had best buy upgrade the ram(acctualy my did for x-mas) but they placed one additional 512mb ram in so the ram is aranged as follows(SPD timing tables)
slot one DDR-SDRAM 256mb pc3200 200mhz
frequency 133 200 200
CAS#latency 2.0 2.5 3.0
RAS#toCAS# 2 3 3
RAS#Precharge 2 3 3
TRas# 6 8 8
correction NONE
Registered NO
Buffered NO

Slot two DDR-SDRAM 512mb pc3200 200mhz
frequency 166 200
CAS#latency 2.5 3.0
RAS#toCAS# 3 3
RAS#Precharge 3 3
TRas# 7 8
correction NONE
Registered NO
Buffered NO

slot three DDR-SDRAM 256mb pc3200 200mhz
frequency 133 200 200
CAS#latency 2.0 2.5 3.0
RAS#toCAS# 2 3 3
RAS#Precharge 2 3 3
TRas# 6 8 8
correction NONE
Registered NO
Buffered NO

Slot four
DDR2-SDRAM

so from what i tell iknow i am only ruuning in one channel currently (this is the reason i asked if i could add one more 512mb to slot four)

also if this is a possiblity would this create the correct pair (even if i cant use that slot four, i just would like to know if pairing ram works like this)2 - 256 & 2 - 512

further more the timming tables as far as the 512 compared to the 256s is different is this problematic

Does any one see any thing that seems not right ANYTHING

one more, i would like an explanation of SDRAM
will this allter what i should be shoping for
