311965 2005-01-08 07:23:00 I have received an email with an 'xls' suffix file. When I try to open it I'm told that I do not have a program to open it with. I've always had a problem when that happens. Any help would be appreciated. thanks,

black

311966 2005-01-08 07:27:00 *.xls is the file extension for Microsoft Excel.

All you need is either to install Microsoft Excel or the Microsoft Excel viewer.

You can get the Excel viewer here (www.microsoft.com)

Hope that helps

cheers

Yes you are right, Open Office will open Excel & Word etc.
I've have Open Office on the XP and the NeoOffice/J version on my Mac, I don't need MS Office. :D
Both are Free.

311971 2005-01-08 20:10:00 I downloaded excel viewer, but after installing it, I get the message "16 BIT WINDOWS SUBSYSTEM.

311972 2005-01-08 20:19:00 What operating system do you use Black? That linked excel viewer was only suitable for XP or Win2000. If you run Win95/98/98se/ME then try the older excel viewer which can be found here (www.microsoft.com).

OpenOffice is really good, but it is a very large download if you are on dialup internet. Check out the cover disc's on computer magazines as often they will have a recent version of OpenOffice.

Damn it would be so much simpler to help if people stated their o/s in the first place .

Anyway Black, if you get the version for earlier Windows, it's probably a good idea to uninstall the one you already got first .
