2005-01-11 09:38:00 | I have not been able to get sound since installation. When I do the sound test the card is detected, but no sound is heard. Does the following information give anyone a clue as to what is wrong ? | 313044 | 2005-01-11 09:44:00 | The solution might be quite simple. THis is what I did on my FC3 to get sound: 1. Have a look to see if there is a /dev/cdrom 2. If there isn't, you need to make a symbolic link to it from your actual device (e.g. /dev/hdb). So it would be ln - s /dev/hdb /dev/cdrom (as root). 3. Then change the ownership to you with chown YourUserName /dev/cdrom.

2005-01-12 01:40:00 | Been doing some looking into this sorta thing, apparently theres been a few issues with Audio in FC3. Im helping a user currently with their AC'97 audio. Mixer is fine, modules all loaded, unmuted, KDE/Gnome shouldnt affect it unless your sound app is using artsd or esd (You should try setting it to ALSA or OSS). Im still not sure what hdd access has to do with loss of audio, but having not used FC3 I may be wrong. What does alsamixer show? Chill.

2005-01-12 04:24:00 | Apart from the FC3 user that Chill is helping at the moment, *most* sound issues in FC3 can be attributed to the sound defaulting to mute. As root, you just need to unmute and up the volumes from a Terminal window using aumix. Chill also gave the command before on how to do this with a single line command. I had no sound on my FC3 installation until I unmuted it, just one of those weird quirks  How are you getting on Antonia?

2005-01-12 05:14:00 | AFAIK its just alsa default to mute it | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2005-01-12 05:24:00 | Hey Antonia! I'm really enjoying FC3 apart from what appears to be an identical problem to yours. What happens as you boot up? With me i get a very fatal sounding chirp just after i get to the bit that says: "initializing hardware storage network audio done [OK]" and thats all the sound i get Also have you tried running a live CD, such as knoppix? I did and the sound worked, but not on FC3 For the lucky, comparing the settings with knoppix and FC3 may supply the solution. :D :badpc: :D

2005-01-12 06:33:00 | Thanks all, I am trying out all suggestions. Will let you know what is happening. At the moment I can hear a very faint sound signal when I do the sound check. Can hear it clearly when i put both speakers to ears. (Must be a funny sight) No Personthingy, I do not get any sound during bootup like you do. I have just finished downloading the Knoppix ISO file. Will try it when I have burnt it to CD. Antonia
