312680 2005-01-10 01:00:00 Hey,

Is there a list somewhere of what motherboards are fully compatible with the latest Linux Kernels? I am trying to find whether my board will support SATA drives in linux. It does in windows, with an extra driver?

MSI KM4M-V See Here (www.msi.com.tw)

Any ideas?

You have an extra http:// in your link, which makes my Firefox (not sure about other browsers) load the Microsoft homepage instead :p

You might want to do a quick edit of it :)

312683 2005-01-10 01:14:00 Yes Linux supports your mother board for sata.

You need a kernel that is newer than 2.3 and with via sata support compiled in.

Sata support is under

(in menuconfig)
Device Drivers > Scsi Device Support > SCSi low-level drivers

Then compile VIA sata support into the kernel (a star not a M)

312684 2005-01-10 01:20:00 What do you mean "You need a kernel that is older than 2.3"?

You mean newer??

Try a google search for:
MSI KM4M-V linux

312686 2005-01-10 01:24:00 Hi Ash

I just took a wee look around the VIA driver page, and there appear to be drivers available for your SATA chipset controller VT8237, for Fedora.

Just go here (www.viaarena.com) and follow your nose.

Anyone know if support for this would be in by default in the standard FC2 Kernel? (2.6.5-1.358), or would I have to recompile?

312688 2005-01-10 01:29:00 Easiest way to find out is to google for the chipset, and "modprobe" because you "modprobe" to load the drivers....

www.google.com

So I would say yes :-)

So if it is in by default does this mean it will work off the bat or would i need to run a modprobe everytime I boot up?
