Well, I'm the exact opposite in xp pro. I don't get the dial-tone when dialling to connect to the internet. :(
The sound vanished and I would love it back so that I can tell whether I have phone messages waiting.

I have ticked "enable modem speaker" but it doesn't make any difference.
Would this have anything to do with the modem's driver or what?
Sorry to nosy in to your thread but this problem is really bugging me.
Want to swap modems? :D

312569 2005-01-09 21:39:00 What OS are u using MMM?? XP as well??

Some modems have drivers, where after it's installed, or during the install of the modem driver, u HAVE TO select a country as well. You havent got one of these modems have u?? ie: Generic 56k HCF Data Fax Modem.

This is XP's driver, for my modem.

Even tho its a Dynalink. BUT the last time I downloaded the right Dynalink driver from their site. It lagged too much before connecting, and totally screwed the connection! So, so much for the driver, that was made for this modem. It didnt work properly.

Maybe its on the wrong country?? If not, then try putting an initialisation string in, (This is under the modem in device manager under advanced).

ATM(=)1 = turn speaker on ATM(=)0 = turn the speaker off.

The above command MAY have an = in it. I would try with and without the = to see which one works with your modem, so u hear something.

My OS is XP Pro SP1 on a Toshiba Satellite Notebook

My modem is a preinstalled Toshiba Software 56k Data Fax Modem by Agere and device status says it is working properly. Driver Agere 20/12/02 v.2.1.22.0 Digital signer: MS Windows Hardware compatibility
NCU is AA
Type of line -Telephone [analog only]
Type of dialing - Pulse or Tone
Control command - AT commands and EIA-578 commands.
Monitor function - Computer's speaker.

Sound always worked until I was told to roll back? the driver of the modem when we were checking slowness last year. Sound no longer works since then.
Do you think I should still try the initialisation string still?
When on the internet I still hear sound when a popup has been blocked, and heard Avast the one time that I got a nasty trojan. Would internet settings affect sound on dialup at all?

Thanks for pitching in to help. Cheers.

312571 2005-01-09 22:59:00 Nope the sound I think you're hearing for popups and trojans, is from the soundcard, NOT the sound from the modem. Theyre 2 different devices.

It could be the driver, as MS's default drivers DON'T always work like they should. You could try finding/installing the drivers from the Toshiba site.

It MIGHT make a difference. If u manage to find the driver off the site, and it says its not digitally signed, it DOESN'T mean it wont work. Just as long as it says its for your modem it should work.

Nope, I doubt Internet settings would affect the sound at all.

312572 2005-01-10 00:35:00 Quite a lot of software modems nowadays (Smart Link 56k / 56k Micromodem for example) have an onboard speaker, but this produces a very quiet output. instead these modems run through the soundcard - so make sure that's configured properly. Also, with the Smart Link there is a little tray icon (similar to that of the standard windows internet connection one; eg two flashing lights ) right click on this and make sure there is a tick next to "software speaker" Agent_24 (57)
