313054 2005-01-12 08:55:00 Just an update. Not sure what is relevant. I looked at the links from JenC and Chilling Silence.

Yes johnd, there is a /dev/cdrom. It is a link to x-special/device-block. Is that OK?

When I run AlsaMixer I see three coloured columns
Master(in red) , Master M and PCM. Bottom third of the colums are white, middle is green and remaining part is red.
Underneath 100<>100, 100, 100<>100
Remainig columns are empty

When I right click Volume control in Gnome the only thing muted is the Mic.
Everything is locked though, is that correct? When I max the volume it does still seem to go down again. Not that I get better sound when it is maximised.

When I type the command “cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp” I just get a terrible noise
When I type the command “aumix -v 100 -w 100” nothing happens
lsmod gives the following:

I did get a read on alsa.conf but it is very long. Not sure whether I should post it.

Will keep trying, Antonia

Thats good news. Means the sound is working. Now to get the rest working. I will have a look at my system tomorrow. In windows right now, was gaming.

313056 2005-01-12 09:39:00 Well, it look like you have the same sound chip as I do.

When I run AlsaMixer I see three coloured columns
Master(in red) , Master M and PCM. Bottom third of the colums are white, middle is green and remaining part is red.
Underneath 100<>100, 100, 100<>100
Remainig columns are emptySounds a little different to what you should have. Here is a screenshot of my alsamixer command - screenie (sal.neoburn.net)

Your lsmod output looks the same as mine for audio:

Mine:

snd_pcm_oss 48377 0

soundcore 9889 1 snd

When I type the command “cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp” I just get a terrible noiseThat is good :D

When I type the command “aumix -v 100 -w 100” nothing happensIt did, if you have a look at your alsamixer, you have the settings on 100 now.

313057 2005-01-12 10:37:00 I had a similar problem with Fedora 1,2 &3.
Go to Menu (The Red-Hat)->System Tools->Terminal
In the terminal type:
alsamixer
Press the right-arrow key till you get the 4 VIA DXS.
Use the Left-Right arrow keys to select these and one-by-one, use the the up-arrow key to increase these volumes to max.
Make sure the Master and PCM volumes are up (I usually don't go any higher than 81 on the PCM or I get distortion).
The rest should be easily managed through the graphical util (In my case - KMix).

Hope this helps.

313058 2005-01-12 10:44:00 Sorry - just a little clarification:
" Press the right-arrow key till you get the 4 VIA DXS. "
Keep pressing the right-arrow. It is right at the end. They are the VIA DXS volumes - there should be 4 of them. You know which one you have selected because a red <> appears around the label at the bottom.

313059 2005-01-12 10:45:00 the bt878 is a tv-capture card

Try playing around with the difference between alsa and oss in XMMS
Grab mpg123 otherwise off the net (rpm or source) and have a play.

Chill.

313060 2005-01-12 10:50:00 BTW - cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp is basically just piping random data to your soundcard, regardless of specifying arts, esd, alsa etc... So we know its working, your ouput for applications etc is just b0rked.

Chill.

313061 2005-01-12 11:25:00 Thanks all,

Jen, could you tell me how you got the screenprint of alsamixer in your post, so I can post mine.
I think I have the red colour above the green because the 100 volume is too high.

Thanks Mogwai, but I do not have the 4 via DXS in AlsaMixer. But there may be others like it that have to be adjusted. Have a look when I can show a screenprint.

I will try that Chill,
Antonia
