| 313097 | 2005-01-11 20:39:00 | Hi, I'm trying to suss out an internal / external DVD writer for a company laptop. I'm not sure which yet - but that's another story.... My question is: do DVD Writers work with Windows 98 or 98SE? The ones I have looked at so far are only compatible with 2000 and XP. Is there a reason for this? Cheeeerrrrrs. | 313098 | 2005-01-11 21:07:00 | DVD burners should work for 98 se + (well this one says it works on 98 SE +) if you have a desktop. You may have to / would have to buy a PCI card for 98 SE, for firewire / USB 2 if it wasnt onboard most probably. And most probably because 98 is pretty old, no one is bothering to make anything for it? I spose it depends on the speed and how much ram in a system, on how good it would perform as well. Not too sure, if u can buy cards for laptops that support USB 2 or firewire tho, I've never owned one. (unless both are built in). |

| 313099 | 2005-01-11 21:16:00 | I've had a look on the web and it would appear that a DVD writer will NOT NECESSARILY work on Windows 98/SE. So when the specifications say '2000/XP required' they mean it... The PCWorld article on buying DVD Writers warns: 'DVD writers will also vary in the types of operating systems they support. Windows 98 or higher is recommended.' But as you point out some manufactures do not mention 98. To me this suggests that they don't support it. I guess the only way to really find out if the specs don't specifically say is to choose the drive you want then ask the manufacturer. |

| 313100 | 2005-01-11 21:20:00 | Righto . Thanks for the heads-up . I was thinking that there might be some sort of clear-cut reason why DVD burners will not work on 98 . But if we are coming down to the nitty gritty, the minimums and recommendeds, I might just cut out the bull**** and upgrade the OS, or even the laptop! Hurrah! |
