2005-01-11 02:09:00 | I'm running Windows 98 on an old PII laptop, and the PCMCIA support isn't working. I uninstalled the PCMCIA drivers, restarted the computer, and Windows detected it and installed it properly. However, the little icon that should appear in the system tray is missing (even though the checkbox to select it in the PCMCIA properties box is enabled). When I put a PCMCIA wireless card in the slot, nothing happens: windows doesn't detect the new hardware, and the light stays off. The status field for the slot I put the card in says empty. Also, sometimes when I put the card in one of the slots, the laptop reboots itself. Any ideas? Thanks! -Steve

2005-01-11 05:40:00 | That's the funny thing. I did exactly that. Windows discovered the new hardware and installed it with no problems. The PCMCIA item under the device manager has two items below it, one controller for each slot. I have tried disabling and re-enabling, uninstalling, and re-installing. I even reinstalled windows, but no luck. Any other ideas? -Steve

However there are little "dimples" on the card that *should* stop you plugging it into a 16 bit 5 volt bus. PCMCIA 32 bit is 3.3 volts I believe. Are you sure the agen beast will actually work, or does it need 98SE as a minimum? |

2005-01-11 07:49:00 | Thanks godfather! I am running 98SE, and the wireless card supports it . As for the 16- or 32-bit issue, I did a quick google search to see what I could find out about my hardware . . . its a NEC Versa LX, and the driver for the cardbus is the Ricoh RL/RB5C478 CardBus controller . I can't find any information on how big the bus is, though . If it is a 5V power rail, then I've likely fried the card . I hope it won't damage the computer . If it's not, then what else could be causing this problem? Thanks again!

2005-01-11 08:14:00 | Based on the product info on page 4-21 on the following link, it IS a 32-bit bus . . necsam . com/mobilesolutions/hardware/notebooks/versalx/200584alow . pdf" target="_blank">support . necsam . com I also reformatted the drive and reinstalled windows . Now the pc makes a little noise when the card is ejected, but there is still no indication in the PC Card info box that there was ever a card there, nor does the little icon appear in the task bar . This is getting frustrating .
