312801 2005-01-10 15:52:00 Hey everyone. I am currently running a AMD Athlon 64 3000 at 2.0 ghz, and a Radeon 9600 Pro 256 MB.

I was wondering what the risk's, disadvantages, and advantages and max speed of these are if they were overclocked.

If i were to decide to do this, how would i do it? is it in BIOS? if so how do i get to my BIOS?

312802 2005-01-10 20:26:00 firstly what do you want to overclock? the graphics card or the cpu or both?
the best way to overclock is through the BIOS, press delete when your pc boots and then go to the voltage and frequency menu and change the stuff in there, just follow your nose.

Disadvantages:
-an increase in heat, so make sure you have a good air flow through your case and plenty of fans, dont overclock using a standard HSF, you will need one that will give better cooling

-limit the life span of your components,
-possibly stuff your pc and it becomes a paper weight,

Advantages:
a free increase in speed :)

i suggest you have a good read on overclocking on the net.
what motherboard do you have because some motherboards allow you to overclock through windows

312803 2005-01-10 20:52:00 Hi Dj,

I would recommend having a good look at the following site : www.overclockers.co.nz (www.overclockers.co.nz) and particularly here: http:

I found this site alot of help when I was interested in this topic...

obviously remember all the usual warnings about overclocking :D

Just because you had to ask this makes me think you should not even think about overclocking.
Or if you do, get someone who realy knows to oversee what you are doing.
Learning on your own can be very expensive.

A "free" increase in speed? You have contradicted yourself there. ;)

312807 2005-01-11 01:00:00 Ok so heres what i did. I read up on it, decided to take the risk, but not such a huge one. I entered my BIOS and i DO know what to do in there, and my processor was set at 200 and hte max is 232, not i didnt max it. I set the Processor to 220. IT now runs at 2.22GHZ and the heat increas has only been 1 degree C. Btw, i did this because my computer is MADE for gaming, and when you play everquest 2, you need that speed.
Am i correct in assuming the video card can be overclocked with the same adv. dis-adv..? if so, where do i do that from, i didnt see that in the BIOS

312808 2005-01-11 01:09:00 That's a pretty good job you did :). But I recommend you download cpuburn (pages.sbcglobal.net) and run burnk7 (in the zip file) for a few hours. That will test if your cooling can really handle the overclock.

When you run it, a command prompt will open, and nothing will be displayed BUT your temperatures will increase. Make sure you measure the temperature while it is running!

To overclock your video card, use a tool like Atitool. I had a bad experience with this and I am experienced with overclocking, so do it at your own risk.

Good luck :)

312809 2005-01-11 01:13:00 /sigh to be honest with you guys, i just got scared and turned it down lol. at least i know how to do it now. maybe when i get some better cooling and soem more knowledge on the topic, ill think about it again. Thanks for the help. Peace

312810 2005-01-11 05:42:00 what brand is your radeon 9600 pro? if you would like to overclock it, run the card on omega drivers and overclock it from in there, some graphic card makers have their own overclocking app Prescott (11)
