312625 2005-01-09 22:25:00 My computer is : Processor AMD Athlon XP 3000+, 1024 MB Ram, Windows XP PRO SP1, HDD 111GB (Drive C:), DVD/CD Rom (drive D:).

I would like to create a new partition of 80+ GB on my hard drive leaving drive C with 30 odd GB . The create new partition wizard is pretty straightforward and I am asked to confirm the new partition by clicking the Finish button. The screen that appears seems to be what I want and shows 3 pending operations, *1 Resize XP(C:)
2 Create extended partition
3 Create Data (E:)
I am happy with that and press APPLY which brings up another box asking to apply changes now. I press YES and get a warning dialogue which says
"One or more of the changes you have made require rebooting to complete. If you press OK, the computer will reboot to perform the disk operations."
I duly press OK and the computer does its thing only to show when it has finished that there has been no change to my disk drives.
Where has my new drive E: gone.

So after all that, my question is what have I not done correctly.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

312626 2005-01-09 23:40:00 See if it shows in control panel / admin tools / comnputer management / storage / disk management. Does E show here??

If it does, right mouse on the entry, and initialise/format it.

See if it appears then

312627 2005-01-10 00:00:00 Was Windows XP already installed on this hard drive? If so, I don't think you can repartition it without using a partition manager. FoxyMX (5)

And what do you think Partition magic does?

Go back in with Partition Magic and see what it has done. You should have ended up with 1 Primary partition, an Extended partition which holds the inside it a logical partition. If they are all there did you format the new partition?

Pulls rabbits out of hats? :p

Meh, I was sure I saw the words "Partition Magic" somewhere - went over the post several times but forgot to look in the subject heading.

I should have stayed in bed.

312632 2005-01-10 03:41:00 Is this an evaluation copy, or did you buy it? The evaluation copies just show what they can do. They don't actually do the operation. :D Graham L (2)

Thank you all for your support . However I have no idea what happened but partition magic has come right and I now have a beautiful data partition . I went through the same procedure that I did several times yesterday and today and got quite a shock when the programme started to work .

A good sign for the new year perhaps . Cheers .

312634 2005-01-11 09:44:00 Quite often the file Manger, Windows Explorer or Desk top pro, will not give an acurate display. Hit F5 to reset it. mzee (3324)
