313633 2005-01-13 07:00:00 Hi all,

Hp Pavilion a220a, 2.66 GHz/533 Intel P4, 768MB RAM,40gig HDD, any specs info i can find tells me that it has:
Intel® Extreme Graphics
Integrated w/845GE Chipset

The only info on the mobo from the specs is:
L4S5MG3-GL6E - which when actually looking inside at the board it has a sticker with: K2-GL6E.
Chipset Name: SiS651

Anyway bascially the problem is (i think) the graphics. So i wanted to try a graphics card in it first before my friend goes out and buys one of his own.

I had been told that the card (agp) would be detected auto when it was put in, however that isn't the case.

Next step, i believe, is to disable the integrated graphics in the BIOS or maybe it will have a jumper?

Which is where my problem lies... as it is not booting 9 out of 10 times now, its really hard to get into the BIOS.
So really what i want to know is "if" there is a jumper on the board for the graphics? Which i am having a heck of a time finding any reference to the board and a jumper for it? I can't see one?

Has anybody here replaced the graphics on one of these HP a220a systems that may have a tip or two for me? Can you tell me if it is necessary to disable the old graphics in BIOS or not? Can anybody tell me if indeed there is a jumper to disable on these systems mobos?

The reason i feel it is graphics by the way, is the POST Beeps Point to graphics and also when it does boot, it seems to run o.k.

Also looking at the aida file i ran previously, it shows agp enabled, so thats not the problem.

In a nutshell i guess i am asking -
A. Does anybody know if these systems have a jumper to disable the graphics?

B. Does anybody know for certain i have to disable the integrated graphics in BIOS? On one of these systems.

C. I have also found references saying just diable it in "Device manager" too, which i guess i will try "when and if" i can reboot it...

TIA

Hope that makes sense :) ... no doubt i have forgotten something ;)

313634 2005-01-13 07:46:00 i dont have an hp anymore, but in _most_ new systems the pc auto detects the card and it uses the agp slot, but you might still have to get in the bios to turn it off so you can get the rest of the used RAM back. Prescott (11)
313635 2005-01-13 08:47:00 in your motherboard there should be a jumper u can find with the code crtc1 - i dnt have ur exact pc/motherboard but i have the same chipset. this jumper is used to clear ur real time clock (RTC) RAM in CMOS - This RAM has system setup info, startup passwors etc. - wht i belive it could do is reset ur mobo so that motherboard will automatically recognise ur agp card - at least i belive u could get into bios by pressing del when u start. to do this
1] Turn OFF the pc & unplug the power cord
2] remove the onboard battery - this a cell battery - it will look like a huge silver button
3]if the jumper has 3 pins move the cap from 1-2 to 2-3 pins and leave it for 10 - 15 secs, then move it back to pins 1-2 NOTE WELL - by pins 1-2 i meant its default position-ensure ur @ the clrtc1 jumper- ITS UR PC MAN NOT MINE -
4]replace the battery
5] plug the power cord and turn on ur pc
6] hold the [del] key from the moment u start
finally i have to say this will not guarantee it will sort ur pc on theory it looks good reset evrything it's like a new pc
let me know when ur done - good idea to print this b4 u u turn off the system and TAKE YOUR TIME!!

313636 2005-01-13 23:21:00 Thanks Prescott and fryup.

Yes, i thought at the least i was going to have to get into the bios and check settings there.

As i mentioned its getting worse than ever to boot now, to top it off i presumed the key i would use to get into bios would be "Del" (as fryup said), however, i wasn't sure if i just wasn't fast enough at hitting it (as happens in normal sits anyway...) on the times it did boot or i was using the wrong key to try getting into bios? I rang HP yesterday, they were less than helpful really, suggested the keyboard key "may" be "f1". Most of the research i have done online has suggested either "del", F10, F1 or F2.
Not knowing if i am using the right keyboard key is rather annoying to say the least - as it wastes a good boot, if i am using the wrong keyboard key...

The only reference i can find to the mobo is the page of specs
Here (www.nextcomputers.com.au)
and mobo specs
Here (h10032.www1.hp.com)

So if there is anybody out there that knows for sure which key it is to get into bios for these systems, i would really appreciate it  :) .

Fryup

So you are saying that i should reset the bios basically? I presume you mean put the new card in first, then reset it via the jumper and cmos batt?

fryup

One more quick question for you, are you sure its the "Del" key you use to get into bios? As thats been one of my main probs i.e knowing i am using the right keyboard key? As hp said it would be F1 or Del?

ITS UR PC MAN NOT MINE

Lol, well actually... its my friends :D

Thanks heaps :)

313637 2005-01-13 23:32:00 A quick google "hp pavilion bios setup" showed two reliable looking postings:
One says "F1 while the blue HP screen is showing" , the other says "F1 repeatedly while booting".

If that doesn't get you in, try holding any key down steadily from power up. You might get repeated beeps which indicates that the BIOS keyboard buffer has overflowed, which usually is considered as a "keyboard error". Many BIOSs consider that as grounds for putting you into the BIOS setup. :D

313638 2005-01-13 23:58:00 Cheers Graham :), I was thinking that F1 was my best bet, till i read fryups post saying "del" again, lol.
Thanks.

313639 2005-01-14 02:34:00 When you say not booting 9 out of 10 times is the machine POST'ing or just a beep and black screen?

If no POST then it may be a bot blocker issue. It should beep then run the floppy. If AGP graphics, the screen will stay black as it is looking for ISA based graphic card (remember those!!) some will use PCI cards i have been told.

If this sounds like what is up try flashing the BIOS - if its not then just ignore me and i'll sit here quietly mumbling to myself and my small green friend on my shoulder....

313640 2005-01-14 03:10:00 DON'T TRY FLASHING THE BIOS . That is a major, potentially destructive, operation .

Installing a revised BIOS ("flashing") should be done only if:
There is a known bug in the current version, which the new one fixes .
The bug is known to be a problem in THIS computer .

This computer works . The problem is getting it to use a different video system . That's unlikely to be a bug in the BIOS .

313641 2005-01-14 07:52:00 Well heres where i am at so far . . .
F1 finally got me into the BIOS :) , and i immediately saw what i presumed would be the problem -

Primary Display Adapter = PCI
so i changed this to the only other setting of = AGP/Onboard Graphics .

Turned it off, put the card back in again, and booted, but back to the same error as before i changed it and inserted the Graphics card???? (I don't get this error without the vid card in) .

Error Reads:

Award Bootlock BIOS v1 . 0
BIOS ROM checksum error
Detecting floppy drive A Media
Insert System Disk & Press enter

The only other setting in there (BIOS), which i didn't touch, was the ram to allocate the onboard vid card? Should i have removed that? Still - in theory i think it shouldn't have interfered with detecting the card would it? At worst i expected to have just not regained the 64mb it was allocated?

I am starting to wonder if i am on the right track with the video card, but i searched several places for the post beep sequence and they all steered towards the video card . . . - its award BIOS which was apparently brought by phoenix??

Anybody got any ideas on something i am obviously missing here, or whether or not perhaps its not the vid card? I guess the only other thing is really the mobo!
I am on it now and its fine when running, just doesn't like to boot and seems more unhappy from a cold boot as well i think . . . I noticed it is starting to get a bit slow to shut down now too  .

Dzina

I am pretty sure its the grahics  , i am definately getting the beep sequence related to graphics and the monitor is dead when this happens . . .

Cheers

Any more ideas appreciated ;)

313642 2005-01-14 09:18:00 The only unhelp I can give, is that I have found some HP to be intolerant of some graphics cards, to the extent they simply refuse to boot. godfather (25)
