313605 2005-01-13 06:40:00 Alrighty, I installed Debian a couple of days ago, and now to install the madwifi Aetheros drivers I need the kernel source... only problem is that it didn't come with it.

Is there anyway to get this?

I'm using kernel 2.4.18, and have already tried apt-get installing the source...

313606 2005-01-13 06:42:00 Why not compile yourself your own new kernel based on 2.6.10?
Its not difficult and is a great milestone in linux abilities :)

313607 2005-01-13 06:47:00 I've done it before, I just don't want to because last time it packed a hissy fit and the hard drive crashed (= bad experience)... but if that's the only way... Growly (6)
313608 2005-01-13 06:48:00 Oh now you've gone and done it chill, you've convinced me. Growly (6)
313609 2005-01-13 07:05:00 Just take your time doing the kernel (read everything!), and make sure you have your motherboard manual handy if you want to produce a nice lean kernel specifically for your hardware. :) Jen (38)
313610 2005-01-13 07:46:00 Read everything?

I ran make oldconfig and held down enter...

313611 2005-01-13 07:52:00 Go for it then!

... although the whole purpose of compiling your own kernel from scratch is to produce a lean, fast booting machine without unnecessary hardware baggage ... :p

313612 2005-01-13 07:57:00 Well I only did that in retaliation for it not letting me run anything but make config or make oldconfig - I didn't have ncurses-devel for menuconfig or that GT thing for xconfig, nor did my apt source. Growly (6)
313613 2005-01-13 08:08:00 after reading this, i thought i can do this, i found this (www.preshweb.co.uk) and it may be of use. Prescott (11)
313614 2005-01-13 23:40:00 Type "debian source 2.4.18" to Google, and use the first link. That will tell youi what you need. Graham L (2)
