313618 2005-01-13 05:19:00 Today at home i received a strange email . Normally I would dismiss this sort of thing as spam, but (a) I have NEVER received any spam at all in my home account, and (b) this one was different from any I've seen before (at work), or have ever heard of .

Here it is, with personal details removed:

From: "[name]" <xxx@value . net . nz>
To: "[name]" <xxx@xtra . co . nz>
Subject: New email address
Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2005 16:45:37 +1300

Hi there, We have changed internet providers for a better /cheaper deal . Our old account at XXX is now closed . Please send all new emails to xxx@kol . co . nz Hope this email finds you all fit and well,
Kind regards
xxx .

*********

I received the email, delivered to my account, but the names and addresses in both the From and To headers are unknown to me .

My account is with paradise . net . nz, and I have Norton Antivirus (fully updated) in operation .

I find it particularly strange that the email is delivered to someone I've never heard of at an xtra . co . nz address, when my own address is at paradise . net . nz

Any ideas?

313619 2005-01-13 05:28:00 Your name might of been in the BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) field which is invisible. This means that you will receive a copy of the email even though your addy is not visible in the To: or Cc: fields. If you don't know who the sender was, it might of been accidently sent to you as some people have their email clients set to add all email addy's to their contact lists. If your email addy gets passed around via Fwd: emails, this is how an unknown third party can get your address. Jen (38)
313620 2005-01-13 06:09:00 Another explanation is that it is a fishing expedition to grab legitimate email addresses for a mailing list .

I've had something similar from someone whom I do not know saying they have changed such and such and now want to confirm their records . They had my name right but I had no idea who they were . I only viewed the source then deleted the mail .

313622 2005-01-13 06:24:00 Probably someone who's ended up with your name in their addres book from a forwarded message or mailing list, or virus sent out under your name.

It looks pretty legitimate to me. Although posting the headers would determine that.

Nothing to get worked up about.
