313329 2005-01-12 19:05:00 I’ve got a defrag problem that has snuck up on me.

It goes like this:

Defrag used to run perfectly in Normal Mode.

Then it started to reset itself and take two or three shots at completing its task.

I then said OK we’ll do it in Safe Mode. Away it went no problems.

Now it’s started this resetting itself in Safe Mode and taking three of four shots to get through. I get the message: “Drive Contents Changed…Restarting”

When it finally got through I closed it and hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to see what was running and the only thing running was Explorer, which I think is normal anyway.

Anyone any ideas? (Running WinME)

313332 2005-01-13 02:28:00 Get rid of any extraneous files ... maybe you are short of space. Defrag need disk space to work in. Graham L (2)
313333 2005-01-13 02:49:00 All a bit of a mystery guys.

I covered Microsoft’s suggestions and found a couple of Autoexec.Bat files and a couple of Config.sys that didn’t look important so I renamed them and everything has started OK.

I Don’t have a screen-saver so I guess I can’t blame that. I didn’t think screen-savers were loaded in safe mode?

Finally, I don’t think it’s space either Graham as the disk is partitioned at 10gig and only 2gig is in use.

Anyway, I’ve just run it again and it went right through in Normal Mode. Having said that there wasn’t much for it to do as it had been defragged a couple of times today, albeit after a number of restarts.

Thanks anyway guys

That is what I always used to think but recently discovered it to be untrue.
