| 314057 | 2005-01-14 13:01:00 | After successfully reformatting the hard drive, Windows ME appeared to install successfully. The problem is Win ME does not recognise the installed modem (CNET 56K Ambient modem). The modem was working prior to the reinstall. I have two CNET modem driver CDs, one has driver files in a subdirectory under WinME but no setup file. The other fax/modem disk has an Msetup file. When Msetup is run a message appears saying that a modem is not installed. The second problem is that Windows ME does not recognise the NVIDIA Geforce 2MX Graphics Accelerator card. The Monitor adapter is stuck at low resolution 16 colours using a Standard PCI Graphics adapter, the only option adapter available in control panel. When trying to run the AGP - V7100 software CD, the setup says to install the card first!. However when rebooting, the first item listed before windows boots is the NVIDIA Geforce 2MX VGA BIOS. I rang the supplier, they suggested getting the internet connection working then downloading a driver from www.nvidia.com. This was when I discovered that the modem wasn't working. I've tried using the Add New Hardware Wizard in Control Panel to search for the cards. The wizard reports that no new hardware was detected. Using the wizard to search manually brings up a list of optional devices, unfortunately the specific modem and graphics cards are missing from the list. It seems a coincidence that Win ME does not recognise both of these cards. I must be missing something? Any help or suggestions would much appreciated. Allan |

Even xp has problems with these things Easy solution Buy elcheapo modem (15-21 bucks) with driver from dick smith or other install then download forceware drivers from nvidia.com which will sort out your vid card then if u feel adventurous, hunt down the cnet modem driver |

| 314059 | 2005-01-14 13:28:00 | Thanks for your suggestions. I am surprised that the CDs that came with the PC do not have the right drivers. Can I download a driver using another machine and then manually install them? Will pasting the driver file into a folder work? If so, which folder should the file go in? Allan |

If so, perhaps you could just point the add hardware wizard towards this folder and see what it does. Theres no reason stopping you from downloading the required driver elsewhere though, as long as you have a method of transfer to your own comp. Folder location shouldn't matter as it's only there temporarily. |

| 314062 | 2005-01-14 20:05:00 | Have a look in Device Manager. The modem is probably showing in there with a yellow exclamation mark. That will be why the hardware wizard is not picking it up as new hardward. Delete it from device manager, then go into the modem icon in the control panel and install it frrom there. During the installation it will ask you if you want windows to search for the modem or if you wast to install from a list. Select install from a list. When the list appears, click the 'have disk' button and point it to the driver files on your hard drive. | 4bes (2848) | ||
| 314063 | 2005-01-14 20:23:00 | Ambient modems have intel chipsets & the drivers can be found on intels site Remove the modem & write down the first line of numbers on the chipset they should look something like this: Ambient MD5628D-L-A Go to intels site find the modem or type it into google Download the files to desktop (on someone elses machine of course) Unzip the files then transfer to floppy Under Device Manager select update driver for the unknown device then browse to the files on the floppy, the modem will install I did this yesterday on an XP machine which didn't recognise an Ambient modem & it worked fine or Do the same procedure with the CD you have, browsing to the folder on the CD instead of the floppy |

PCI communications was hightlighted in yellow, I pointed it manually to the driver disk and it started to install, it asked for the second disk of drivers, once inserted the install was completed, hey presto! I then downloaded the latest Geforce 2MX driver set-up from NVIDIA.COM. This got the graphics card up and running. Remaining software and personal backed up files reloaded, and the computer is now running like new. Thanks again, I'd been pulling my hair out. Allan |
