313816 2005-01-14 03:43:00 Hello everybody .

This morning, I received my new motherboard and CPU:

Elitegroup 648FX-A2
Pentium 4 3E GHz

I installed the motherboard and CPU as I normally do . Set it in the computer case, installed the memory and hard disk drive, and then turned the system on just to test that everything was OK .

Everything seemed fine until I noticed that I couldn't turn the the system off by pressing the power switch . I even tried holding it for 5 seconds, and still nothing . To turn it off, I had to use the switch on the back of the power supply .

I turned it on again and noticed that the HDD LED was constantly lit, the power LED wasn't lit at all and I wasn't hearing any beep codes during the system bootup . The CPU and case fans were running normally, as was the hard drive .

This indicated to me that the speaker and LED connectors (and possibly the power switch) weren't installed correctly . So I re-checked my motherboard manual, but surely enough all the connectors were in the correct places . As as test, I tried the connectors in different positions, but no luck .

I double checked my CPU installation, but there were no obvious faults . Memory was in fine . As well as the hard drive . I uninstalled the hard drive and tried it again . No luck . Removed the memory . Nothing . Not even any beep codes .

The only options I can think of at the moment would be to test the CPU/motherboard in known working systems and try out another power supply unit . Unfortunately, neither of those a viable options at the moment .

So this leads me to the forum members . If any of you can offer any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it . Sorry for the rather lengthy post . Hopefully I haven't left out any other important facts .

Thanks in advance .

313817 2005-01-14 03:50:00 I would tripple check the power button and reset leads to make sure they are on the correct pins.

Can you turn it on with the normal power button?

313818 2005-01-14 05:44:00 If you can turn it on with the power button you have that pinned correctly therefore it should power off with a continued holddown on the power switch.
I would go to the elite group site and
1. download the manual for this board
reason = pinouts on mobos can be documented incorrectly
the latest correct pinout settings should be availlable there
2. have alook at FAQ's while your there for this board, it could be acommon problem.

313819 2005-01-14 08:33:00 I'm officially a complete idiot!

My mate walked in today and noticed me agonizing over my predicament . Upon explaining the situation to him, he took one look inside the computer case and immediately pointed out that my current power supply didn't have an ATX12V power connector . He then explained that all Pentium 4 processors require the ATX12V connector, which I did not know .

After banging my head against the wall a couple hundred times, I asked him if my many attempts to boot the system without this connector could result in some sort of damage to the components . He wasn't entirely sure, but he did say it was possible . I checked out the Intel website and they day damage is possible . Guess I'll never know until I get a new power supply, which will take a while .

I strongly doubt this, but has anyone else here had the same problem? I'd feel a whole lot better is someone did .

Anyway, thank you Rob99 and the highlander for replying and sorry for wasting your time when I could have solved the problem myself with a little more research .

313820 2005-01-14 08:45:00 I've read in manuals that systems won't boot unless that connector is in, but to not turn off???? :illogical

oh well, hopefully no harm was done

313821 2005-01-14 09:28:00 If it turned on then the CPU power regulator is getting +12v from normal connector as well instead of only from P4 plug. Problem is that there is only 1 +12V wire and connector in normal ATX plug. If you load CPU this 1 pin in connector can overheat and melt MB connector. Turn off problems can be PSU. PaulD (232)
313822 2005-10-25 11:44:00 hope you dont mind me hijacking your thread (I assume all your problems are now fixed) but I had VERY similar issues - ie I cant shut down my pc. The main difference is - it used to work so its not the connector - but I also get bios checksum errors and have to continually reset the bios settings (ie switch off the raid etc)
I've tried replacing the cmos battery already and have flashed the bios but still no good.
Holding in the power button doesnt work either - it shuts down the screen but nothing else.......
hoping its not a faulty mobo
