314040 2005-01-14 13:12:00 hi, my jetstream connection is running slowly through Ethernet since i broke my 3 gig limit last month, but i conclude Xtra is not at fault. I believe the problem is either the Ethernet settings or the adapter itself. I have tried the following:

* USB connection--works fine but is inconvenient, but therefore problem is not at Xtra's end.
* Replacement modem (D-link DSL 302G)--same problem with ethernet, therefore it is not the router.
*Several ethernet cables, to no avail, therefore it's not the cables.
*Reinstalled driver for ehernet adapter, to no avail, therefore the problem is not the driver

So, that leaves my PC. either the ethernet connection settings, or a hardware fault. I have XP, and a 3com 3c910 integrated controller. I have had no problems prior to being throttled for breaking my data cap, but the fact that i was throttled the same time the behaviour started may be pure coincidence.

Thanks in advance
PS dont tell me just to use USB, as i cannot easily disconect it at lesiure and the cable doesnt reach :p

Have you begun a new billing cycle? If not then your connection is slow because you've exceeded you limit.. read the terms of use regarding Jetstream. If you are on a new billing cycle, try another network card or try uninstalling , re-installing your current network card drivers, if they don't work try getting an updated driver?

cheers

314042 2005-01-14 21:28:00 maybe u should goto www.jetstreamgames.co.nz to check the real speed of your internet connection....

i don't think it is ur ethernet fault... it won't break down so easily unless you are doing crazy to the computer

hope that helps

314043 2005-01-14 22:07:00 Have you tried re-starting your router and then testing speeds? Turn it off for a minute and then turn it back on.

Lo.

314044 2005-01-14 23:53:00 "slowly" doesn't mean anything.

Come up with some numbers.

314045 2005-01-15 01:47:00 Ethernet doesn't "run slow". Packets either go from point to point at the rated speed or they don't. Between your modem and computer, the packets should go at 10Mbps, 100 Mbps (or 1Gbps:D). What can give slow transfers are collisions --- you shouldn't have any, or errors. These lead to resending of packets. :( If that happens too much, it appears to be "slow'. But the Ethernet system is being very busy, so it's "fast". ;)

Try running Ethereal, and see what is going on.

314046 2005-01-15 06:06:00 yes, the first thing i did was reboot the router. and i have tried a second one. so it isnt the router. the ''average'' speed is about 40-70kpbs, not the 260+ i get when I use USB. The exact behaviour goes like this:

10 second burst of speed (about 200kbps), then nothing for 10 secs, burst of speed again, then nothing again, etc etc.

314047 2005-01-15 08:03:00 Firewall?

Edit: and

Sorry! The administrator has specified that users can only post one message every 30 seconds. :xmouth:

314048 2005-01-15 08:11:00 ZoneAlarm Pro, with Windows firewall off. However, turning ZA off has no effect still. (with windows fwall turned on of course) Kindel (6640)

For breaking your 3GB limit you have been throttled back to 64KB/sec and will have to wait for a new billing cycle to begin. Check on the JetStream Usage when that is and you should find it back to full speed after that.
