1378138 2014-06-29 10:38:00 Hi guys.
I have an Acer ASpire One, with Windows 7 starter.
Been having problems for months, with it, so finally replaced with Linux.
Well, I'm not that happy, with Linux and I've tried heaps of different ones, so thinking I can put Windows 7 back on and give back to DIL.
Can someone tell me where I can get an Acer Windows 7 iso, to load on?
Thanks
Ian

1378139 2014-06-29 11:14:00 Doubt you'll get a genuine Acer Starter ISO, unless you buy it from Acer.

What you can do is use a normal W7 ISO, run the ei.cfg Removal Utility on the ISO then select Starter from the options. Full instructions from the Microsoft Community site: answers.microsoft.com

Of course you'll need to download drivers from acer as well.

You can get any genuine Windows 7 disc, any edition at all, and remove the ei.cfg file from that disc using the utility wainuitech linked to - this means Windows 7 will ask you which edition of Windows you want to install in Setup. :)

Thank you, but only windows disk I have, is XP Pro.
Running Vista on this desktop, that I don't much like and Linux on netbook.
I tried Google, again, this morning and was not much help.
I did read up, on this ei.cfg, but until I try it, makes little sense.

1378143 2014-06-30 01:38:00 I did read up, on this ei.cfg, but until I try it, makes little sense. You run the utility on the W7 ISO, then burn the ISO to DVD or set to a USB Drive- this removes the version restrictions, makes a universal DVD.

EXAMPLE: When you buy a Windows 7 home Pre the product key has to be a Home Pre, a professional or any other type wont work.

When you run the program and boot from the DVD you then select the version of windows you want for the product key you have. (that link shows everything)

You of course still have to have a windows 7 Starter product key to enter. If you don't have one, and its not on the Laptop then you cant install it. (well you can but it will only go for 30 days).

If the original came with XP and that's the only COA you have then your stuck with XP.

Yes, it come with Windows 7 starter.
Trying to run the ei.cfg, program that I downloaded and I get an error message "Error reading or opening the disk image, etc.
I right click the ISO image and checked and it says nothing about being, read only.
I looked at the ei.cfg help fill and it says it's a common error, but unknown what I can do about it.
Getting to much :(

1378147 2014-06-30 05:11:00 Go to answers.microsoft.com (answers.microsoft.com) In the first reply near the top are two links for Windows 7 Ultimate - select the X86. ( DONT get the x64)

X17-59463.iso is what you will be offered. Download it, its about 2.3GB.

Run the utility on the ISO - if you get an error in the box that pops up like the one below -- Ignore it, as long as it says it has been removed in the middle.

5803

Burn the Now altered ISO to a DVD-R, Boot from the DVD, once you select the Country - Install you'll be offered all the different versions you can install, select Starter and carry on, entering the Product key when prompted.

Just tried it and it worked perfectly besides the error message as pictured.
