1362601 2013-12-14 20:05:00 A friend has asked my advice about getting her 11 year old son a PS3 off Trademe, and as
I do not know anything about Playstations (or other game systems for that matter) I told her I would
ask for information on PF1. Her son currently has a PS2.

PS3 consoles on Trademe start around $220, with a good selection up to $300 (Buy Now).
Some are "Slim", "Super Slim", 120 Gb, HDMI, etc. What is OK? Any models to avoid?
Are the cheapies ($220 - $250) good enough?

Her budget is limited: $300 would be quite a stretch, would be better at $220 - $250.

Or perhaps XBox is a better option?

You gamers probably won't like this but I first told her that her son should be happy with his PS2 as
the family is struggling financially, but she is determined to get him a decent gift that will actually be
a combined Xmas + birthday gift as his birthday is a few weeks after Xmas. Is there that much difference
between PS2 and PS3? I have never noticed but maybe PS2 games at our local United Video store are
few compared to PS3.

Thanks.

1362602 2013-12-14 22:28:00 You do know you can buy a new one for 299. Only to get cheaper with up coming sales plod (107)
1362603 2013-12-15 01:07:00 PS4 has just been released and is NOT backwards compatible
Expect a lot of PS3 and games bundles to come up on trade me in the first quarter next year.

Might be a idea to buy him a token give for Christmas and hold off on the PS3 till the Birthday, there might be a few good deals by then.

1362604 2013-12-15 01:56:00 DeSade and plod - thanks for the info. I did not know that new PS3's are only $299.
Giving a token / voucher seems to be a good idea.

1362605 2013-12-15 02:02:00 I checked PriceSpy and see that Noel Leemings has a PS3 for $299 but
it is a "Slim 12 Gb" whereas the more expensive PS3's are 500 Gb.

Is 12 Gb too limiting?

And BTW are PS2 games compatible with a PS3 console?

1362606 2013-12-15 02:05:00 Ps2 no play play with ps3. plod (107)
1362607 2013-12-15 02:46:00 EB games have 2nd hand consoles if you have one in your Area, bit safer than trademe and I think they give a 3 month warranty or something.
Was thinking of selling mine but if that's all they are worth it can carry on being my Blu-ray player :)

12gb would be very limiting.
I don't console game myself but I have a lot of friends that do, most of them recommend a external HDD if you get the lower GB PS3.

1362609 2013-12-16 18:03:00 Thanks for the info on EB Games and 12 Gb limiting .

At this stage my friend is going to wait and probably give a voucher but will have a look
at EB Games when she gets down to Wellington .
