I used to work for a rental place and without exception all the Caldina's we had were completely gutless.
Maybe the newer models are better but I would urge you to find one and drive it 'hard' on the motorway before you buy it.

Would help if we knew age of cars to which you refer.
Mate has older one and finds it good.

1363137 2013-12-21 00:42:00 I have been looking at the TradeMe listings for Caldinas and cannot work out why they are such a low price. Do you know what the reason is?

1500cc suits us, because the only towing we would do would be a few trailer trips a year around the local area. I can see why you would want more.

Have you decided to move to the Kapiti Coast after all?
Yes J, off back to the north.Mid march with luck.
If a car would suit, mate who was a land agent and didn't make any money is in his 50ft boat in Havelock North, he has a mint Corola for sale, with 107K on clock for 6K.
It is auto.

1363138 2013-12-21 00:53:00 Define gutless, it can be a personal thing as much as a judgement on the car. If you're comparing it to larger engined cars or sports cars sure. I've always found Toyota 1.8 - 2.0L Engines to be quite strong, hardly gutless. Never driven a Caldina though so who knows, I've heard good things about them. An ex work mate called his Caldina a cockroach because he said it was impossible to kill. I have owned 2 corollas, a corona, and a 3.0L camry and for work have driven various corollas and coronas and wouldn't describe any of them as gutless, including the 1300cc corolla I had as a work car for a while. It all depends on your requirements and frame of reference I guess.

Didn't realise until listing this how many Toyota's I've driven :) Just to add a little balance I've also owned a Mazda 929, a Nissan 2.0L Bluebird, and a Holden sunbird 202. I have fond memories of all my cars except the Holden which was a problem from the day I got it and the corona which was my first car and had huge miles on it (didn't stand up to the young idiot phase of my driving career).

Good luck with your property search. In our price range we only found one house we were prepared to buy, on the northern outskirts of Waikanae, but eventually we were put off by proximity to the expressway construction over the next few years. Of course I suspect you are in a higher price range if you have sold an unencumbered property in Swannanoa, especially without being subjected to any vultures in the process. Up towards Pekapeka there are some nice rural properties.
