If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.-Ronald Reagan |

| 1362922 | 2013-12-23 05:10:00 | At the moment I am feeling that if I could afford to buy a new car, I would seriously consider diesel, but as I have to buy a car with approx 50,000kms on the clock I feel reluctant to take the risk of a mechanical failure in the engine department because of the cost of repairs. Also if people are ambivalent about buying diesel cars, then on trying to resell the car eventually, buyer resistance may be high and the resale value may plummet compared with a used petrol car.! Diesels are great, more torque, far better for towing, far more fuel efficient, and have a far longer economical life than a petrol engine of the same capacity so long as they are properly maintained, ( that is why one sees so many diesel taxis in Europe),but they have some serious downsides - don't buy a used Jap import diesel, because diesel engines work at much higher pressure than petrol, they are more susceptible to problems if scheduled services are missed or deferred, oil and filter changes must be done to schedule - Japanese motorists are far from conscientious in this respect - sludged up oil causes major problems in diesel engines. Fuel quality is also an issue, most lower priced cars do not have water separation filters in the fuel system, and diesel contaminated with water in suspension can cause expensive injector problems, it is well worth fitting a Fuel water separation filter in the fuel system if there is no OEM water separation fuel filter fitted. Any used diesel needs to be thoroughly checked out, if you cannot verify the car's service record then don't touch it. Go for a European diesel ahead of a Jap or Korean, PSA and VW diesel engines are superb |
