315052 2005-01-17 07:06:00 Hey,

I'm going out to buy a new hard drive tomorrow (120gb or 160gb). I currently have the system running an 80gb ATA 133 Drive.

My motherboard supports SATA so I was wondering is it worth the hassle of using a SATA drive... In single drive mode as well?

Will I see much difference in performance?

315053 2005-01-17 07:23:00 I use a sata hdd as the main hdd on this. Its not too bad, its pretty fast loading XP. The power cable is a bit flimsy tho. Just make sure u get a power adapter, if the power supply doesnt have 1. The cable that comes with the drive, isnt for power its for the data ONLY.

I also use a normal IDE hdd as a backup hdd.

It may depend on whether u use XP/2000 or other. Using a sata on 98 maybe different from using a sata on XP/2000.

Just make sure RAID is OFF in the BIOS. I would also slipstream SP4 with 2000, or SP1/2 with XP, so either may find all of your hdd, if you're not going to partition it. And hopefully your system isnt too old, or the bios wont detect all of the hdd either.

315054 2005-01-17 07:23:00 I have a Seagate 80Gb SATA (ATA150) and I haven't seen very little change compared to my old ATA66. I personally wouldn't bother anymore.... unless you got lots of cash to spend. ~sy~ (95)

315056 2005-01-17 07:50:00 Sata is probably a little faster though not much. As far as I am concerned the big advantage is a cooler running case. No hot air trapped under those ridiculous ribbon cables.
I've been running a 120 gig Seagate Barracuda Sata drive for over a year and I love it.

thats what rounded ide cables are for, i brought me a set a few months ago, its great, more airflow to the HSF becuase those ide cables are not covering them

315058 2005-01-17 09:16:00 Ide cables can easily be placed out of the way of airflow anyhow, providing your not trying to stuff it all into a small case.

I HATE small cases.

I LOVE airflow....

Well, not so much love, Bit i dig it.

315059 2005-01-17 12:14:00 Get the SATA.

I didn't and now I am being burned by that decision, as I desperately need a new HDD and I have all my channels full up.

I have 120GB + 40GB + DVD-ROM + CD-RW.

And both HDDs are full :(.

I guess I'm buying a new motherboard with SATA too then.

Don't make my mistake - get Sata.

315060 2005-01-17 12:29:00 I'd get the SATA drive as well as it could be useful in future upgrades and is a bit more tidier.

What motherboard do you have and what chipset does it use? You probably won't get much speed increase if the SATA chip runs of the PCI bus like all the older models. In fact I doubt that the SATA drive will be any faster than the equivalent IDE drive anyway because they simply aren't fast enough to use up the bandwidth. Perhaps if you were using a few raptors in RAID you would need the SATA but mainly you would be getting it for looks, tidyness and airflow reasons.

when i first saw the pc, i was like, "wicked, now that is small and stylish". i didnt think at the time i would need extra stuff added into it, it came with a dvdrom but after 2 months i noticed how much i needed a cdrw, then i problems started, i had to find a way to wriggle the ide cables to the burner, it fits, just. then it came to adding the graphics card, also a tight fit.
i dont think i will ever buy such a small case again, it looks good and thats about it
