314966 2005-01-17 03:23:00 I run Win XP home edition on an AMD Athlon 1700+ with 256 MB RAM.
My problems started when I foolishly tried a tweak suggested on a Firefox forum in which it was advised to edit "config" by typing <about:config > in the address bar and changing:

"network.http. pipelining" from the default "false" to "true"

"network.http.proxy.pipelining" also from the default "false" to "true"

"network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" set to 30

and finally to create a new integer; "nglayout.initialpaint.delay' with its value set to 0

This all above was meant to speed up the response that FireFox would produce and according to the other participants in the discussion, the tweak worked very well indeed.

Unfortunately something went wrong since I am novice, although I did in fact make the adjustments as above in addition I think I established some other changes because since that time whenever I start the computer up it hangs on start up with a black screen showing the Award software that's installed and a message to press Del to enter setup.

At this point nothing happens for about three minutes (pressing Del or escape have no effect) but after about three minutes the boot process suddenly starts up and the computer then boots normally.

I have scanned for viruses with a negative result as well as spyware using Ad Aware and Spy Bot again with negative results.
I would really appreciate some help but please keep the suggestions simple. Many thanks.

314967 2005-01-17 03:30:00 I dont think this has anything to do with the tweak u did . Since it isnt even in Windows when it hangs (Its just after post / booting up of the system)

Sounds like a hardware prob . . I would check cables inside the case / cards that are installed, and the jumpers on the hdd's cd/dvd's .

Does it bring up /show the devices (CD's/DVD's), then hang??

Or hang before it detects the devices that are in the system?? (CD's/DVD's)?

Try going into the BIOS, and set the BIOS at the defaults, and set whatever hdd's / cd's etc again as masters and slaves then save settings and reboot .
(If u can get into the BIOS) .

That tweak was published here and many of us, myself included, applied it successfully so it seems strange that yours was a bit of a disaster .

Although Speedy's suggestion is pertinent you say that you are a novice so I would firstly try a system restore back to before you did the fiddling and see if that fixes it .

Can you also let us know what other changes you did? That information could very well provide the clue as to what has happened .

Let us know how you get on .

The machine hangs before anything is detected. So obviously you are right, I'm not in Windows at all at that time.It is also before the optical mouse lights up.

I can get into the BIOS by pressing DEL after it starts to boot, but I'm not sure what you mean by setting the hdds etc as "masters and slaves"

I would appreciate directions on how to do this...Thanks.

System restore does not work.
The machine goes through the motions but at the end the dialog box Indicates that no changes could be made and I'm back to square one.

Unfortunately I had to fiddle around a bit with the settings before I got the hang of how to make the adjustments and at one time I think I made some change to the cofig page but in my ignorance I really don't know what change I made. Sorry I can't be more specific.

I have tried a windows repair with no luck either.

314971 2005-01-17 04:15:00 Once u set the BIOS to its default settings, select the primary and secondary ide devices, (thats what I meant by master and slave sorry, for hdd's and cd's/dvds etc), make sure they get detected once u get into the BIOS. And save the bios settings. Then reboot.

And I would turn the system off, make sure the ram is in properly. It sounds like something may have come out, and when u boot, its not picking up / detecting something properly.

Did u install something in the case recently or do overclocking??

Haven't opened the case at all.
Frankly I wouldn't dare.
I did transport the machine to a friend's place for some help so it's certainly conceivable that something got knocked loose in transit etc.
Again I'm not sure how I make sure the hdd etc is being detected once I'm in the BIOS. Could you be more spicific please.
Sorry to be so dense

314973 2005-01-17 04:35:00 In most modern BIOS's once u go into primary ide and secondary ide (if u have 2 hdds or cds), once u go to the option in BIOS (click enter), on the primary or secondary ide option/entry .

The BIOS SHOULD detect / bring up the brand/model of the cd / dvd or hard drive . If it does, at least u know theyre getting detected by the BIOS . And if it detects it in BIOS, it SHOULD also detect them after u boot / on post . .

Before windows loads .

314974 2005-01-17 04:40:00 if none of the above works
press The f8 key while the machine is booting, you will get a list of options select
last known good configuration ( navigate this area by using the up and down arrows on your keypad and the enter key once you have selected your choice)
