314790 2005-01-16 07:49:00 Persistent first drive not show .

I have two drives . Quite often the computer does not detect the first drive which the operating system is installed when startup in dos mode .

If I put win 98 startup disk and boot it up, at the moment the first drive is not detected . The two drives are mounted on a raid and they are the only two drives in the computer . This problem often happened in the past whether the one drive was mounted straight on motherboard (ATA 33) and one was mounted on raid card (ATA100) .

Any suggestions/explanations would be appreciated .

314791 2005-01-16 08:16:00 welcome to pressf1 lightfoot,
are you using win98 by anychance? im not sure but does win98 support raid? a few more system spec's would be handy, if you dont know your system spec's, download everest (www.lavalys.com)this will tell you everything about your pc

314792 2005-01-16 08:33:00 This happens in win98 and currently just upgrade to win2k. Yeap, win98 supports raid. I have been using raid card on win98 for awhile since the motherboard did not support large drives , but this is a new motherboard. However, I decided to run my two drives on raid card since it's ata100 instead of ata33, faster I think. Thanks lightfoot (39)
314793 2005-01-16 08:45:00 was this a clean clean install of 2k?
isnt raid combining 2 hdd and making them look like 1?

314794 2005-01-16 08:53:00 RAID 0 is Striping, combining two hard drives to look like one.
RAID 1 is Mirroring, writing all data to both hard drives, so if one fails you don't lose your data.

314795 2005-01-16 08:56:00 It is a clean install but does not seem so clean. At present first drive can be detected. I will have to pull the plug on second drive for it to detect. I would like to do some ghosting but the first drive is not shown when boot up with startup disk, however, when in windows both drives show up. lightfoot (39)
314796 2005-01-16 09:06:00 I mean the first is not detected in dos when using startup disk, but is detected in windows. This often happens, but not sure why . lightfoot (39)
