314604 2005-01-16 00:35:00 Hi there! Had a problem with slowing down of PC and reinstalled Win from CD. OK now. Then have to activate it again.
Having found an article in http:''//netsecurity.about.com/windowsxp/qt/aaqtwinxp0829.htm, saying that it is possible to transfere activation. To do that one has to go to System32 and find files wpa.dbl and wpa.bac, save them somwhere and then after reinstalling Win XP, copy into System 32 folder.

Have done that, but still Win wonts to be reactivated.

Any ideas or comments?

314607 2005-01-16 02:54:00 You did boot to safe mode & rename the existing files then transfer your backups while in safe mode didn't you?
And you did make the backups before the reinstall, not afterwards?
This method has always worked for me

314608 2005-01-16 03:09:00 Hi there! Did not go to Safe mode, but renamed old files and copied from flopy.
But then I remebered that after first activation I replaced the Connexant modem with DSE, which means change of hardware.
Probably will have to call MS anyway. What do you think?

Thanks

314609 2005-01-16 04:56:00 Supposedly Win XP will cope with about three changes of 'major' hardware components before it spits the dummy.

I manged to 'reactivate' once using back-up of dbl in safe mode... next time it wouldn't do it and said I had to register my copy of XP.

I agree easy way is reactivate by phone and speak to that lovely mechanical lady ;)

Well you all obviously have internet connections so why not simply let it do it's job and do it online automatically? The system forgets now after a certain time so you can re-register. If it doesn't work then you can always talk to the lady

Any ideas or comments?I have only ever needed to copy the wpa.dbl and not the .bac which is probally just a backup, and I used RockXP
