315150 2005-01-17 18:28:00 I think I only really need confirmation of this. Over the last few weeks, now and then when I turn the comp on, the screen goes absolutely psychedelic on the odd occasion, although it is starting to happen more and more frequently, usually first thing in the morning. This happens as soon as the vid card is initialised.

Its just a crappy old nVidia MX400 but I've been careful to keep the drivers up to date etc. so I don't think thats the prob. It happens even before the os drivers have a chance to load anyway.

If all else fails, whats a good midrange card to get? I'm not teh hell-gamer so the $1,000 type cards are off my list. I would like reasonable performance though.

Thx in advance.

315151 2005-01-17 19:46:00 Have you checked to make sure your monitor cable is firmly attached and the video card firmly seated?

As for what video card to recommend, before suitable advice can be given, you would need to know what the capabilities of your motherboard are regarding AGP speed. Listing your other computer specifications will also be helpful. :)

315152 2005-01-17 20:13:00 I checked all leads and the seating of the card when it started doing its weird thing. Nothing wrong there as far as I can tell.

The comps a 3gig P4, Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000Pro2, AGP 8x, 512mb ram. A relatively new homebuilt. The vid cards a hangover from my last comp.

315153 2005-01-17 22:09:00 Well if your in the market for a new card - how much do you want to spend? There's a massive price range now :) HadO (796)
315154 2005-01-17 23:15:00 if your buying any computer gear, set a budget and stick to it.
do you play many games? if so what games? a midrange card could be a 9800pro?

315155 2005-01-18 00:18:00 It depends - some people would be best suited for the likes of a 9600XT or 9800Pro - I find a 9600SE works fine for me - games like GTA vice city and NFSU 2 work sweet as - even Doom 3 can run fine, but it overheats my poor passvely cooled card. george12 (7)

It sounds like it could be a minute crack in the PCB, so it's worse when it's cold. Not fixable.

Budget $75 -> 9200SE
Budget $110 -> 9550
Budget $130 -> 9600SE
Budget $190 -> 9600 Pro 128MB or 256MB
Budget $250 -> 9600 XT 128MB or 256MB
Budget $365 -> 9800 Pro

Of course that is rather biased to ATI .... heh ..... nVidia cards are fine too.

double you tea eff george?
The 9600SE is a pice of **** compared the the 9550.
Most 9550s can easily OC beyond 9600pro speeds also.

And the 9600 pro 256mb are junk; they come with 400MHz core/400MHz mem instead of 400/600 (standard)

Tell us your price range. I would probably recomend the 6600GT at about $400 (or just a bit under).

Also: is it the 800FSB or 533FSB P4?

Only ever on Doom 3 - it runs about 10 mins and locks up - but the CPU is only at ~45 at that time.

I don't overclock it. I don't really mind though, I didn't like the game that much. Everything else runs sweet as so I'm not complaining.
