316198 2005-01-20 20:38:00 My computer: AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.4ghz, 256mb RAM, FIC AN11 mobo, 40gb HDD, CD Writer.

I have tried to install Ark Linux, which went relatively successfully (except for the fact that the mouse dies after I select the language). While booting the first time, it boots to a command line, and if I leave it for a while, it comes up with an error about the X system and then saying "loading modules: failed". I login using the default username, but that keeps me in the command line mode, and I cannot get into a GUI. Typing "startx" brings up an error "no screens found".

I am trying to reinstall again to see what will happen, but does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is? (Chill??)

316199 2005-01-20 20:46:00 It takes a while when first loading CUPS, it creates a printer driver index.

First boot is always the longest in Ark, but it quickens up

What modules does it fail on?

You could always try xf86config to make a new config file
Im pretty sure they added in a reservation that'll save 5MB in /tmp so that X can always start.... They were going to.

Chill.

316200 2005-01-20 21:49:00 Sorry - I have a 2gb hdd not a 40gb hdd.

It gets to a stage where it says "x respawning too fast", and then terminates it for 5 minutes. After that it says "Loading Modules:" stays there for a few seconds and then says "failed". It does not mention what modules are failing. Hitting enter brings me to a login prompt.

There are some other errors earlier in the bootup process which I didn't quite manage to see, but I think it mentions something about the hard drive being full. Maybe the 3gb minimum requirement is a real requirement, not just something which is there for the sake of it.....

316202 2005-01-21 00:39:00 Hit F2 and see..... I would say its pretty likely they're for real. I'll ask in #arklinux on freenode later and confirm when I get home tonight. Chilling_Silence (9)
316203 2005-01-21 00:40:00 Thanks Chill - yeah, I hit F2 to see the "verbose mode" where I saw the errors, but they were going through too fast for me to actually catch what they were.

I also accidentally found Topologilinux http://www.topologilinux.com/ - have you tried it before?
