315724 2005-01-19 07:55:00 Hi,
I am installing a Western Digital 80Gb hard drive to my Gateway P111, 733, ME computer, using Data Lifeguard version 11 for Windows. Everything goes fine upto the restart of the computer after formating and partitioning. I rechecked my BIOS settings and the setting for primary slave is Auto, and when I restart and enter setup the WD800 is shown as the primary slave device. I have tried the installation several times and the problem is always after the reboot, sometimes the desktop freezes with no icons, sometimes the cursor will move, but I can't click on anything, once a message came up to say there was no Western Digital Drive found in the system. I tried to install the drive using FDISK in Windows and the computer froze when rebooting (the same as I was getting with Data Lifeguard). I have now downloaded and installed an update to my BIOS, and the System Information screen now shows the drive as 80GB (before it was 64.5). However, upon reconnecting the new drive and starting the computer, it now brings up a blue screen (before the normal desktop is reached)with the message; Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted. If I restart the computer with the drive attached the same thing happens, and I need to switch off the computer, disconnect the drive and restart and use GoBack to restore the system to before I attached the drive. Before upgrading the BIOS I could restart with the new drive connected and the problems wouldn't start until the reboot after partitioning and formatting.
I am waiting for a response from WD. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Graham. :help:

315725 2005-01-19 08:07:00 If u only have one hard drive jumper it to master, and set it to primary master (AUTO) in the BIOS. See if that helps.

Whats configured as master, why this hard drive is on primary slave??

So, did you install ME from the Windows ME CD??? And where does Data Lifeguard version 11 for Windows come into it??

You installed ME with / from this?? And whats this program do exactly??

Also, since you've flashed the BIOS, try setting it to the default settings. And set your options in the BIOS again, save settings and reboot.

What else is in the case?? Any CD's? DVD's?? And are these are the secondary ide connection?

315726 2005-01-19 08:40:00 Sorry. I wasn't very clear. The 80Gb hard drive is being installed as a second hard drive, which is why I've set it as Primary Drive Slave. Primary Master jumper set to Master and new drive jumper set to Slave - all recognised in the setup/BIOS screen. 1st hard drive is what came with the computer and has the OS and other programs on it. The new hard drive is just for extra space (son has just got a digital camera - small 1st hard drive running out of space fast!). Western Digitals Data Lifeguard is their hard drive set up and copy software.
I've got a CD drive and CD-RW installed on the secondary IDE.
The computer just doesn't want to know when rebooted with second hard drive connected.
Graham.

315727 2005-01-19 08:43:00 hey there,
im not sure but does winme support big hdd's? i know that win95 or 98 only support up to 36gb.....

315728 2005-01-19 08:58:00 That's be my call as well you will need to format the new drive in 3 or more partitions no greater than 32 GB each in Fat32

Windows XP and Windows 2000 limit partition creation to no larger than 32GB on FAT32. This limitation is by design: Microsoft wants you to use NTFS for large drives. If you use Windows Me or Windows 98 to format a drive, XP and Win2K can use a FAT32 partition larger than 32GB; however, these OSs can't create the partition. Also, keep in mind that when you use ATA/IDE hard disks larger than 127GB, you might need to update your computer's or hard disk controller's BIOS to properly support those larger drives.

315729 2005-01-19 09:19:00 From what I've read the larger drive should be okay, and the WD software is meant to set the drive up for use with ME. There was a problem with misreporting of the drive size, but since updating the BIOS, it shows as an 80Gb drive.
At present I can't get as far as partitioning as the blue screen with "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted." message appears almost as soon as I switch the computer on (with the hard drive connected).

315730 2005-01-19 10:14:00 Ok then what format have you used for the new drive, remembering that Win 98 / ME support Fat 32 and not NTFS

Does the pc boot if you unplug or remove the new drive?

315731 2005-01-19 17:35:00 just out of interest try the new drive on 'cable select' setting instead...... drcspy (146)
315732 2005-01-23 08:40:00 Hi, Thanks for the comments and suggestions. Friday night after trying a whole lot of things that Western Digital suggested, I downloaded the installation software from their website that was NOT for a computer running ME. They had a Windows version for 98 onwards, which was what I was trying to run, and a DOS version for 95 and earlier. As the computer was freezing before getting to the desktop I decided to try the DOS version from a floppy, and it gave me a straight forward install, there was the new hard drive recognised and I could actually access it!
I couldn't however use the DOS software to copy my old hard drive contents to the new one, but guess what? The Windows version of the software worked for that and after 1 1/2 hours of copying I have everything on the new 80Gig drive (didn't require small partions). It didn't seem to copy a few Zone lab files, but they are just the ones that ask if a certain program is trusted, so I am sorting that as we go.
So..... all things get sorted eventually....... as long as you ignore the instructions!!
