2005-01-22 11:26:00 | Anyone had any experience with Kiwi on Line ISP. They are advertising really cheap unlimited dial up connection & I'm tempted to change. Any comments appreciated. | Peter M (852) | |
2005-01-22 11:31:00 | as far as i know they are perfect for just surfing and email, not downloads however as they disconnect after 3 hours due to server constraints to prevent clogging the servers. Give them some time and they might expand. | Tux (606) | |
2005-01-22 20:19:00 | whats your budget Peter? im considering moving to orcon unlimited dial up becuase it is only $14.95 a month, atleast its cheaper than xtra, so orcon maybe a consideration

2005-01-22 21:25:00 | gidday, tried it out a couple of weeks ago, and found it lagged considerably, when trying to send e-mail, and took several attempts to connect, when trying to surf the web. It may have something to do with living in a provincial city, as a relative, living in the auckland area, says it works well. cheers, robby

2005-01-23 02:09:00 | Depends on what you need. I joined Hypernet now Orcon and I get 30 hrs for $9.95. Plenty for me. SM

2005-01-23 03:44:00 | Anyone had any experience with Kiwi on Line ISP . They are advertising really cheap unlimited dial up connection & I'm tempted to change . Any comments appreciated . -=< TONY H replying, not PETER H >=- [FONT=Arial Black]Not being a member of PUSH F1 as I know it all . . . Using Dad's account here . . . The main reason for me choosing KIWI ON LINE (KOL . CO . NZ) over SLINGSHOT . CO . NZ or ORCON . CO . NZ was their huge banner advert proudly stating " :rolleyes:DID YOU KNOW ALL KOL ACCOUNTS COME WITH 20MB WEB STORAGE? " . . . Aparently they do, but *** READ THIS ***, not yet . I discovered that the reason why all my FTP attempts to a guessed server name were completely failing was that the "20mb of space is not available yet - thank you for your patience" (from mouth of company rep upon receipt of my complaint)! BUGGER . . . The SEVEN email accounts and 20MB of space are something special amongst this world of ISP competition . . . But, would have been better off going with IHUG or someone else - At least their advertised web space is active and available!!! When logged into the net through KOL I am finding I wait ages for a connection to MSN MESSENGER (and once on, it will not get into MSN PASSPORT sites without timing out at least two or three times!) . . . XTRA hosts these services in New Zealand, and I have noticed that if you log onto the net via XTRA these services run super fast . . Where as IHUG, PARADISE and KOL (in particular) seem to suffer a vastly inferior "home user to Hotmail server bandwidth" . Bloody Telecom . . . Anyways, KOL . . . I am very tempted to go with SLINGSHOT after only one week of disspointments with KOL . I actually had to reset my computer becuase OUTLOOK got all confused when the KOL server took so long to respond and then seemingly crashed before the complete message was sent meaning that OUTLOOK thought it was still in the middle of processing outgoing mail until machine reboot! Crikey moses! As for P2P networking (particular KaZaA) - Forget it . Response times are so bad in weekends that you'll struggle to even get logged in . Although, if downloading from or ftp'ing to a straight IP address I have found the data flow to be close to impressive . I got a more effecient 10 . 6mb download through KOL than I did through CLEAR . NET . NZ . . . And (once the amazingly slow connection was eshtablished) I found a 4 . 9MB email was sent fractionally faster than the same email through Clear . :D OVERALL --- [COLOR=DarkOliveGreen]Connection availability and reliability - 90% Had two BUSY signals (6pm Friday - I blame it on the School Kids) Speed and Ease of Use - 75% Have multiple trouble when connecting to more than one service (Messenger and Hotmail whilst downloading for instance) which I have to take the unusual (and unwarranted) step of logging out of services! Technical Support and Company - 85% Once my concerns that storage wasn't working were known they got back to me real quick . . . Although, this score should be 10% as they completely stuffed up advertising stuff they couldn't come thru' with!PRICE - 99% --- well, it would be 99% if the advertised services worked - But they don't, and the severe limitations of the P2P or any hop skipping and jumping of such a nature mean that you possibly could not play any games (I havn't even bothered trying!) . -O-V-E-R-A-L-L- If I averaged all the above scores you'd find something like 85% . YEAH RIGHT! Fat chance . Let me say that I am currently dead broke, but am still thinking of throwing my $25 KOL signup away and borrowing $50 for Slingshot three months in advance!!! Tony - graffix@kol . co . nz (don't be expecting lightening quick response though!)

2005-01-23 08:01:00 | and found it lagged considerably, when trying to send e-mail, This fascinates me - how does e-mail "lag"? Anyway there are heaps of threads already on KOL - use the search.

2005-01-23 08:33:00 | Thanks for all the comments. Currently I am paying $25/month unlimited for world-net and thought I might save a few bucks when I saw KOL advert. Might wait a bit longer after reading the comments here. They may improve. | Peter M (852) | |

Peter, Don't be fooled by cheap monthly on-line charges, you need to find out what their office hours for technical assistance are. A lot of these cheap ISP/s seem to think that computer problems only occur during normal office hours. Find out if they offer outside normal hours (after 1700 & weekends etc) if they don't run away as fast as possible. How many operators do they have on duty outside normal times because that is when most people ring for assistance. In the end the bottom line really is!!! you get what you pay for!!! If you pay very little you can rest assured you will be getting very little in return. These businesses are there to make money not get into a friendly relationship with you. They are mainly concerned with how much money they can get off you for the least possible effort on their part. It costs big money to have technical assistance available outside of normal hours so how many technicians do you really think they are going to put on!!! consequently buy yourself a telephone with a builtin speaker system so you can do other things while you wait in line for them to answer you. Good luck because you are going to need it!!! Kind regards, Brendon |
