316786 2005-01-21 23:47:00 I have a second hand laptop that i will be looking at selling to a friend.

the question is what is a fair price?

its a AMD Duron 1GHz compaq 256Ram 20Gb drive.

fresh XP install from the compaq recover CD.

comes with office XP.

battery is almost new, system is mostly run off mains with battery kept in a draw.

lid hinge is a bit sloppy.

no real faults or problems.

what price might i get for it on the open market?

316790 2005-01-22 01:21:00 Probably about $500 depending on how shagged the battery is. ninja (1671)
316791 2005-01-22 02:01:00 Just because the battery "has been kept in a draw" would not make it "nearly new" unfortunately. It's not going to necessarily be any better than if it had been used and charged regularly.

I would say $500 - $600 perhaps a little more depending on the Office version (remember that the original Office CD's must be sold with it, and any copies on other PC's removed)

316792 2005-01-22 02:38:00 Realistically, the value is only worth around $250, that's second hand value. Try for what you want, but someone smart would not pay more than that. Sell it to Tux, $300 dollars more and you'd get yourself a pretty decent laptop.

Doesn't matter about real faults, etc, there's no warranty to cover the problems and when problems do arrive, that laptop is not worth repairing.

It seems to be a laptop that is over 5 years old, you're limited in upgrading/repairing. You'll still be able to get 144pin DDR, you will have trouble replacing the CPU, Hard Drives will still be replacable.

You say it's a Compaq Presario 700, well I've worked on quite a few Compaq Laptops, not sure if I had encountered this one, but from what I've seen from these earlier models, they usually have 1 PCMCIA slot, 1 x Printer, 1 x Video, 1 x USB 1.0, builtin 56K modem, standard CDROM (not faster than 24x) and Floppy and the usual sound outputs. Worse thing about it, no Ethernet port, but less than $40 you can get yourself a Type 2 10/100Mbps PCMCIA Ethernet Card.

Can you say what features it has?

316794 2005-01-22 03:34:00 no, kame, i would have to disagree with you. before purchasing my desktop i looked at purchasing a second hand laptop for a little under a year. Laptops hold their prices very well, and to buy on secondhand would be about $500-600, 250 is way to low, Tux (606)
