2005-01-21 23:49:00 | A tale of three PCs on a home LAN. Win2k on 2 PCs(NTFS), WinXP on the third. ADSL router modem as the switch/hub. All machines can access the WWW. But printer sharing is a nightmare. File and device (CDRW) sharing is as bad. Why is it soooo difficult? This is a home LAN. Two grandparents and one (responsible) grand daughter. Paranoic security is quite obscene. This type of problem seems to be spoken of in hushed tones, even by techs. If it's too complex to cover on this forum, can anyone point me to a manual, or a web site or some other resource that will give me step-by-step instructions. Pretty please. The matter is driving me to drink! (more!) Perry the perplexed

2005-01-22 00:04:00 | I wouldnt bother trying to share burners. Sharing was made for printers and folders, not burners over a network. If u have a firewall on any of them remember to add the ips to it, or if u have something like Norton Internet Security, use the Home Networking option in NIS to configure the LAN. | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2005-01-22 00:16:00 | I wouldnt bother trying to share burners. Does that comment apply also to drag and drop files using explorer? (Which is mostly what gets done) If u have a firewall on any of them remember to add the ips to it, or if u have something like Norton Internet Security, use the Home Networking option in NIS to configure the LAN. I've turned off the firewall on the XP machine and I don't think the two W2k PCs have it installed/working. But I'll check, after I checked out the website suggested by johnboy. ips = IP addresses - right? We have static IPs for each PC and the DSL router/modem. Perry

(Which is mostly what gets done) Yup, I would say, if u only have 1 burner and u want 2 other PC's to use it, I dont think it would work properly with drop and drag, (well anything to do with the burner) . What program are you using for the burning?? XP's built in burning or something like INCD (Nero), or CD Creator/DirectCD? Is the burner on the XP PC? I've turned off the firewall on the XP machine and I don't think the two W2k PCs have it installed/working . Perry Yup ip = ip addresses thats correct . Can any of the 3 PC's share folders at all? Or is it just XP you're having trouble with, with sharing a folder?? from the 2k computers?? Have u created a folder on each PC then shared that folder? And on XP in My computer / tools/folder options/general / simple file sharing is ticked . This will save u adding both of the 2k PC's as guests to access the XP folder . Not shared the whole hard drive? |

2005-01-22 08:38:00 | Yup, I would say, if u only have 1 burner and u want 2 other PC's to use it, I dont think it would work properly with drop and drag, (well anything to do with the burner). My grand daughter has used explorer to drag and drop data files to the CDRW on her grand mother's PC. There didn't seem to be any real difficulties with that. (We were having a network impasse at that time, so she did that and took the CD to my PC so she could print the job on the LAN default [laserjet] printer). Which raises another point: what's the position with printer drivers on Linux? What program are you using for the burning?? XP's built in burning or something like INCD (Nero), or CD Creator/DirectCD? I found XP to be a nefarious OS to rely upon for writing to a CDRW. I've used both InCD and DirectCD to format data CDs. But XP refused to write to (but would read) such CDs, even though the CD s/w section of XP is attributed to Roxio - creators of Direct CD!!! Is the burner on the XP PC? No. There's one on each of the W2k PCs. Yup ip = ip addresses thats correct. Can any of the 3 PC's share folders at all? Or is it just XP you're having trouble with, with sharing a folder?? from the 2k computers?? I need to take this question in manageable bites. One W2K PC (wife's) can't access the default printer on my W2k PC. When attempting to install my printer on her machine as the default LAN printer, I get access denied/don't have per- mission response (of sorts). I went to bed in disgust (it was midnight!) and my recall may have suffered accordingly. (W2k Prof - BTW.) Have u created a folder on each PC then shared that folder? No. Do I need to do that? What I'm seeking is to share all drives and all devices (scanner excepted) on all PCs. And on XP in My computer / tools/folder options/general / simple file sharing is ticked. This will save u adding both of the 2k PC's as guests to access the XP folder. I'll need to try that, later. Until I start that PC and look at what you suggest, I'm ignorant of what you describe. Not shared the whole hard drive? I don't grasp what you mean, there. I do want open sharing across all machines. Security paranoia is not a healthy attribute in this home environment. Perry

2005-01-22 09:14:00 | Sharing a CD-RW drive is not wise. The writing of a CD requires that the data to be written is fully available to meet the stream being written, little bufferring is able to be done in the drive. Networks are not good at making it available in this "real time", so many coasters could result.

2005-01-22 09:50:00 | Yup I wouldnt try and network burners as Godfather has stated . Or scanners for that matter . If u want to burn on XP disable XP's built in burning . Its a major PITA! XP's built in cd burning is limited in what it can do . It isnt reliable . OK . Not too sure what 2k can do, or cant do . Have never really used it, or had it installed long enough . With file sharing, its a good idea NOT to share the whole hard drive ONLY a folder between each PC . Sharing the WHOLE hard drive, if u get hacked or something like a worm gets through . (Well thats if u want to do file sharing) . That could be the end of 3 systems until you reinstall . Hmm couldnt quote what u said as it kept on coming up with something begin too short! . So, had to do a reply .
