317285 2005-01-23 08:50:00 Hello
A few weeks ago I posted about having problems with making Age of Empires work on my Laptop (HP ze4520ap). It has worked in the past no problem but I hadnt used it for about 8 mths. I thought I had fixed the problem with a suggestion from a F1 forum member to download a new ati driver. Did that and AOE worked fine. But now two weeks later the same problem again but now many normal functions are running slow. eg menus are slow to appear etc. The error message I get on trying to launch AOE is "could not initialize graphics system. Make sure that your video card and driver are compatible with direct draw". I have done all the xp trouble shooting things. I have also done disk cleanup, defrag, run spybot, adaware se, avg7 with no improvements.
It seems like something is gobbling up my computers resources slowing it down and making resource hungry software like games impossible to run.
Any help and advice appreciated.
Cheers

317286 2005-01-23 08:56:00 It could possibly be a Direct X problem. What version of Direct X are you using. What are your system specs and also what driver version are you using. Make sure you are also using the latest chipset drivers for you motherboard.

cheers

317287 2005-01-23 09:31:00 using Direct X 9.0c. Mobile celeron 2.4Gh processor, Win Xp home, 190mb ram. Not sure how to go about updating the chipset drivers. Checked the HP Total Care driver update website but could see any chipset driver update. malone (6796)

317289 2005-01-26 09:26:00 your ram amount is on the low side, it would help heaps if you got another stick, 190mb is nothing.... Prescott (11)
317290 2005-01-26 09:59:00 I'm guessing but they drivers may have corrupted. Have you got a recovery disk? Growly (6)
317291 2005-01-26 10:17:00 Maybe try running the tests in the directx diagnostic - this will tell you if directx is installed and none of it's drivers are corrupted. To do this, type 'dxdiag' in the run box, and on the various tabs, check that there are no problems listed in the box at the bottom of the page, and on the graphics and sound tabs, click the various test buttons to ensure that all is working.

Cheers,
Craig.

Yep have run the dxdiag no probs. The RAM thing could be a factor but doesnt explain why it worked fine before these problems started.
Still scrating my head??

317293 2005-01-27 08:29:00 try reinstalling direct x, that might help Prescott (11)
317294 2005-01-28 05:18:00 thanks Prescott
am a bit of a beginner here. Could you give me a quick steer as to how to go about the direct x reinstall. Can I just lift that off my xp cd after uninstalling? Or should I unistall direct x then download the latest version?
appreciate the help.
