317078 2005-01-23 00:05:00 Hi

Recently My AthlonXP 2600+ Barton has been reaching high temps
such as nearly 70*C.
Im not allowed to open up the case, to do anythign abuot it, so in an act of desperation, i underclocked it.
i think i changed the fsb from 166 to 100 which resulted in it running at 1.15Ghz instead of 1.97Ghz.
now the strange thing is, its still running at about 46*C
and this isnt even under load.
is this bad?

317079 2005-01-23 00:15:00 buy a better HSF and some fans, because you need alot of cold air flow, why you open the case? its a waste of money if you cant use your cpu at standard speeds Prescott (11)
317080 2005-01-23 00:25:00 something else is bothinger me.
say for example, i run everesthome. if i have teh CPU fsb set at 166 ( the highest it will goto , and the standard setting) it says "AMD Athlon XP-A, 1916 MHz (11.5 x 167) 2600+ "
but if put the fsb at 100, is says 'AMD Athlon XP-A, 1150 MHz (11.5 x 100)"

why doesnt it say 2600+ any more, even tho the chip is exactly the same!?

317081 2005-01-23 04:39:00 I would quickly open up the case. There may be dust and thing clogged up close to fans, etc. that's not letting the fan turn as well as it should. If you are still unable to make any progress, I suggest you taking it in to a technician to get it checked up on if you aren't too confident yourself.

Otherwise a new fan for the CPU would be a good idea.

Err... since u set ur FSB to 100 ur clock speed as you have calculated is 1150 MHz, which obviously is no longer a 2600+

What u have done essentially is UNDERclock your CPU, may solve ur heat problem ...but u are losing ALOT of performance...

I would suggest you do, is set your CPU back to its default speed and try and reduce the voltage u are giving it! WARNING!! Doing so MAY cause ur computer to BECOME UNSTABLE! But if you have a good chip, then there's a good chance that it can run under volt. Step down 0.025 at a time (Default at 1.65 volt), and bench it every time to ensure stability (using prime95 or such program).

This is the most efficient way of reducing heat if your chip can run undervolt that is.... or you can just fork out some $$ and get a new HSF with some arctic silver 5.

O BTW if u do try to undervolt ur CPU, it maybe that u undervolt it too mch and your computer wont even boot, in which case u will need to clear your CMOS.

LEt me know how u can on. gl gl!

317083 2005-01-23 09:00:00 as far as i can see there are no voltage settings in my bios,
id rather not play around too much, under clocking it via the fsb is a tempeory solution which is very very easily reversible and hopefully doesnt void the cpu's warrenty ( shhh, dont tell anyone)
ist my chip still a 2600+, just an underclocked one!?

im gonna see if bumping the fsb up to 133 helps, hopefully the temp doesnt go too high

317084 2005-01-23 09:19:00 may I ask, what motherboard do you have? mejobloggs (264)
317085 2005-01-23 23:49:00 this is insane, you buy a cpu and you want it run standard and not have to play around with under/overclocking, just get some better cooling and leave the cpu standard or slightly overclocked if you wish Prescott (11)
317086 2005-01-24 01:18:00 PC Chips M863G

its not ym computer
its the family computer, and my dad wont let me open it up and fix it.
he will only let a "certified profesional" to do it
oh and yes
your right
thats exactly waht i want
thoe
i want to actually be able to use it while i wait for my dad to take it in to get a new heatsink put on

317087 2005-01-24 05:25:00 tell him, if i cant put a new heatsink on it, we will have no pc anymore..... Prescott (11)
