317443 2005-01-24 00:21:00 Hi there

just got this 2nd hand dell p4 14 . Ghz . . . . . . . . . XP Pro . . . . .

it has a scsi drive (NTFS) with a adaptec controller . my problem is that i want to boot with my IDE drive (set as slave, FAT 32) from my other working computer but it wont reconise it in the BIOS ive look in options in there and the SCSI controllers Bios but cant find anything there .

The scsi drive has no Jumper so i cant set it to master, is that problem, i tryed to get a SCSI jumper from sum shops but no 1 has any (the jumper is diffrent size to IDE jumpers)

i can boot IDE drives if i take the SCSI controller out .

hope thats enuff info to start with

cheers

317444 2005-01-24 00:33:00 Hmm dont think SCSI have jumpers like IDE. They may have a switch or similar (with a # under this switch).. See if that SCSI is on 6. The cable if needed for SCSI is usually 50 pin not 40 pin like an IDE cable. Or a SCSI hdd may slot into the card, if u have enough room in the case.

I would also check the system you want to put that SCSI into has a BIOS update. There maybe a update on the motherboard's site. if not, you may not be able to put the SCSI in, if the motherboard is too old.

317445 2005-01-24 00:52:00 thanks for that

but i want to put the IDE drive in not the SCSI

the machine is Booting off the SCSI drive and i want the IDE to be a SLAVE drive.

317446 2005-01-24 01:15:00 Go into the BIOS and primary slave or master for the IDE. Once the IDE is connected. Then the BIOS should recognise that IDE. The BIOS doesnt need a SCSI entry if the SCSI is working fine. And all you want to do, is connect the IDE as slave.

Has the IDE been formatted, or got anything on it at all? Like an operating system??

317447 2005-01-24 02:47:00 I'm sorry, I don't understand what you want to do.

Do you want to boot from the IDE or do you want to be able to access it from an OS booted from the SCSI?

You seem to say both. ;)

The IDE primary/secondary/master/slave things are independent of the SCSI unit numbers.

A SCSI bus normally has the controller as device 0, and bootable drives as 6 or 7.These numbers are often set with rotary switches, but some drives (CDs, especially, have a group of three pairs of pins for ordinary jumpers. (The positions are
marked 4, 2,1 --- add the numbers with jumpers on to get the 0-7 number)

It used to be that to boot from SCSI, BIOSs needed to be told there was no IDE, so the BIOS boot code was skipped, and the SCSI BIOS extensions took over. I've only done this in Linux, and it manages to pick up IDE drives, even though the BIOS "doesn't know" they are there.

317448 2005-01-24 02:52:00 tell your SCSI bios not to boot from SCSI. robsonde (120)
317449 2005-01-24 11:40:00 oh yea im bootin XP pro on the scsi and wanna accsess IDE Slave throuh XP.

the IDE slave has ME on it, its not detecting any IDE drives when i boot up it says

IDE device 0 not found
IDE device 1 not found

then boots of SCSI controller

yea the drive is 7 and controller 0 :)

chees for help so far

317450 2005-01-24 17:06:00 The system maybe trying to load ME on the slave at the same time .

Do you want to boot from XP and still use Windows ME on the slave hdd??

If so, you'll have to tell XP about it, or get some kind of boot manager so you have the option to boot from either . If you DONT want to boot from ME, then you might as well format the slave .

Whats set as the bootdisk in the BIOS??

317451 2005-01-25 07:42:00 cheers oh yeps XP still boots with the WIndows ME IDE drive still in. but just doesnt reconsie ME Disk

Im sure i have tryed my other hard drive out of the ME Machine and that doesnt work also (has no OS on it)

317452 2005-01-25 20:03:00 cheers oh yeps XP still boots with the Windows ME IDE drive still in. but just doesnt recognise ME Disk

When you say doesnt recognise the ME disk, if u mean you want to boot from the Windows ME hdd to load ME, you have to add a line to boot.ini in XP so it knows its there. (Then when you boot up the system, it should come up with a menu, so you can select XP or ME, so either boots).

Or do you mean XP cant see the Windows ME hdd at all, once the ME hdd is in Windows?
