317788 2005-01-25 09:31:00 I learnt this one the hard way (by buying the wrong disks!):

Some DVD drives use dvd+
Some DVD drives use dvd-
Some DVD drives use both

For a comparison of the types go here (www.webopaedia.com)

To work out which type you use look at the manual for the drive - mine showed it in large print on the front cover.

(and my boss bought my surplus disks off me as his drive used both types)

317789 2005-01-25 10:29:00 Different drives like different types of media, and it appears almost as thou some vendors 'team up' with Disc manufacturers.

Sometimes a Firmware update can improve reliability of the burn making it more likely to read on certain readers.
Sometimes a change in Media will be all that is required.

Ive had an Optorite DD0201 which _loves_ the cheap media since I updated the Firmware. Princo and CMC are brilliant and play on everything, but I have trouble with some of the more expensive media I get from the likes of DSE.

Ive also had a Toshiba/Samsung TS-H552 which cant stand the cheaper CMC, Princo & Laser discs, but just loves the slightly more expensive media.
Again, a Firmware update improved reliability, but only to the very most recent one... It _didnt_ like the 4th and 5th revisions as much as the 3rd revision which came with it.

Personally I stick with -R across the board!

Cheers

317790 2005-01-25 22:00:00 The general rule (if you have the option of + or - formats) is to use DVD+ for data and DVD- for video. Miami Steve (2128)

317792 2005-01-26 03:51:00 Have a look through this (www.videohelp.com) site. It has a easy to undertand explaination of the different formats and their compatibility with various players. :) 4bes (2848)

DVD+ is structured in such a way that there are extra blocks for error-checking making it a more reliable format - therefore more suited to data. Video, on the other hand can safely be put on either format, but (I am told) the DVD- format allows more flexibility for editing etc.

317794 2005-01-26 04:09:00 I use DVD+ for everything, including video.

Its just more positive.

Lmao.

DVD -R is single layer only.

Just to confuse the issue.

What is multilayer? This is beginning to sound like a cheese club toasted sandwich...

Do you cook it? Eat it? Stack them in a pile to sit on?....

Fortunately I don't need to upgrade to a new drive at the present time or my eyes might be going like this: :@@:
