| 317596 | 2005-01-24 20:53:00 | A friend's hard drive recently died and as the HP computer was still under warranty she took it back to the store . They charged her for a replacement hard drive saying that some program she had installed had done the damage rather than it being a hardware problem . I find this difficult to believe . For one thing she hadn't installed any programs - apart from what came on the computer the only extras it has had installed are Firefox, Thunderbird and AVG, which I put on myself . The computer only gets used a few times a week, mainly for emails and a little bit of websurfing so it has had very little use since purchase last June . Just before the hard drive died she says that "lack of memory" errors began popping up when booting then suddenly it wouldn't boot at all . When I had a look at it the computer wouldn't go past the BIOS recognition screen and in the BIOS setup the hard drive wasn't detected . That is when I told her to take it back under warranty for them to sort out . My friend has paid for the new hard drive but I think she should insist that it be replaced under warranty . Do others agree or could it have been a "software" cause of death by an undetected virus or something? The store said that their data "couldn't be saved" so I am assuming that they tested the drive to see if it was actually dead . |

I suggest you put part 2 of the plan into action and start raising a big steaming stink with the store in question and with HP. Provided your freind wishes you to do so of course. |

They will of course be able to say which program, seeing they are so sure & supply the name of the idiot tech that diagnosed this as the cause The store said that their data "couldn't be saved" so I am assuming that they tested the drive to see if it was actually dead. So how do they figure software caused the problem? If they could diagnose that software caused the drive to die, then they had access to the drive, so why couldn't they retireive her data at the same time? Biggest load of bollocks I've heard this week! |

| 317599 | 2005-01-24 21:31:00 | get onto HP about it. thats just down right rude chargeing for a warranty job. afaik there is a few virus's and programs which can write over the hardrive firmware but they should be able to tell what "program" has done it. |

One of our customers had the same thing recently, took her PC to a """tech""" who told her that SpyBot destroyed her HDD and she needed to buy a new one. The unregulated incompetent IT industry rolls on. |

| 317604 | 2005-01-24 21:58:00 | Thanks guys . I thought as much but wanted to be sure that they didn't have a leg to stand on before I got my eye-poking stick out . Do you have an eye-poking stick handy?Yes, but can I borrow yours? I think it would be a lot sharper than my one . :p |

For them to not honour a clear warranty, with (I assume) no sign of any physical tampering with would invalidate the warranty, and then offer a lame excuse like that without (again I assume) any proof, looks to me like an open and shut case. Go for the throat, I say. |
