2005-01-30 22:21:00 | i tried putting a bootable Windows 98 & ME cd it wont boot. the CDROM Spins the disk but wont start the setup. I also dont have the recovery disc with me. How do i install windows. If you don't have a recovery disc how do you plan to install Windows and the drivers?? Have a look at this FAQ (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) for instructions on reinstalling Windows. You will probably need to boot the computer with a Win98 boot floppy disk as older computers usually can't boot from a CD. See this FAQ (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) for more info.

2005-01-30 23:13:00 | I have an ancient memory that Compaqs are slightly odd BIOS, cover switch... what else do Compaq do just to confuse us? We live and learn. Before putting on the OS, if you have downloaded a compaq set up disk - install that first.

2005-01-31 02:23:00 | Well Im glad we got one problem solved Gum Digger. However, to take the next step you need a Win98 or WinME start-up Floppy. If you dont have one Im sure one of us can help. Not much point in going further until you have one. Yes Mercury, Compaq have many little tricks. Just getting the cover off some entitles you to "Mensa Membership". ;) Mind you, they are usually quite reliable once you get them set up properly. :)

2005-01-31 03:37:00 | Well done BM  If you don't have a legit Windows, you might like to start reading up on desktop Linux's . Just a wee point, call me fussy if you like but, how do you get a hard drive into a CPU? I've been trying all afternoon, it just will not blimmin fit . All I've got for my efforts is 3 bung CPU's and a broken toe when I threw the hard drive on the floor in a fit of pique, but of course I missed the freaking floor which is symptomatic of the whole futile exercise :groan: Anyone got any tips

2005-01-31 08:02:00 | OK, am I to understand that you: Made a start-up disk . Placed it in the floppy drive Turned the machine on Got asked if you wanted to start computer with CD ROM support Answered yes Loaded all the files including CD ROM Driver Wound up with the A:\> Prompt . Typed in E: (Enter) Wound up with E:\> Placed WinME CD in E drive Typed in setup Enter And the machine started to load the WinME operating system Note: Your CD Drive is probably moved from D to E, but we wont go there just now . Now, I take it we got this far without any problems? Yes / No? Couple of things here: Was Scandisk run prior to the loading of WinME? Did you get any messages we should know about? Sooooo, can you confirm that you got this far OK? Cheers Bob

2005-03-19 01:06:00 | hi i am also having the same problem but my hard disk is not completly empty.... i find that if i leave the computer alone for a long time it might occasionaly get to a normal desktop setting...From what I have read of this thread, your problem is very different to the thread starters issues. He couldn't get the monitor to power up and later, the Windows install CD to boot. Disabling the coverswitch isn't likely to help as your machine can still boot, however slowly. I would suggest you start a new thread on your problem, explaining all the details and what your operating sytem is. Mention anything that you have changed/installed prior to this happening. Welcome to PressF1 as well. :)

2005-03-19 01:25:00 | well i have the same issue with the monitor... it remains in standby mode untill suddenly it just pops out of it..... there are two green lights on the CPU and the monitor has brown light signalling its standby mode. but i will try a new thread if no success is gained here...

Have a look in the BIOS of your machine, and see if under security (perhaps) there is an option to disable the case cover security. On Compaq's, the key to get into the BIOS is normally F10 or F12 which you tap when the machine first starts to boot up. Someone more familiar with that setting might be able to provide clearer instructions. Good luck with it. :) |
