317970 2005-01-26 09:47:00 Did you try what Compaq suggested for monitors with blank screens?

If the computer is on, turn off the computer .

Open the computer case by removing the side panels and/or cover .

Disconnect the hard drive power and IDE cable .

Turn on the computer and wait until an error message appears .

Turn off the computer, and reconnect the cables .

Turn on the computer .

317971 2005-01-26 10:57:00 It's good practise to always check the motherboard ends of all cables after working in a tower case. They can and do work loose. Getting in the habit of always checking them before putting the case panels back on, even if they don't look loose, saves a lot of time. (Learnt that the hard way!)

Also sometimes unplugging everything (one at a time) and plugging them back in again solves some problems.

317972 2005-01-30 02:42:00 I have connected the PC to its original COmpaq Monitor & checked the connections inside everything looks fine. but monitor still stays in standby. gum digger (6100)
317973 2005-01-30 04:18:00 Did you turn it off, take the hard drive out, restart it and check the monitor WITHOUT the hard drive in it? Mercury (1316)
317974 2005-01-30 04:52:00 yes mercury gum digger (6100)
317975 2005-01-30 10:39:00 Wel seems like the problem is out of my understanding, Anyone know of any cheap technician around? gum digger (6100)

What location?

If the monitor is still not restarting - remove monitor plug from back of computer and check for bent pins. If it is OK plug it back in again.

You could try putting on a different monitor, removing the leads from the hard drive (both the power and ribbon cables) and restarting.

If that doesn't work - when the computer starts it checks items such as memory, keyboard, hard drive etc. It checks one item and if all is OK it beeps once and goes to the next check. If it finds there is an error it sends a series of beeps. The number of beeps are a code for what it has found wrong.

Is it beeping once on each item and going to the next or is it stopping and sending a multiple beep signal?

317977 2005-01-30 18:33:00 Just a thought that someone else may be able to expand on:

Some Compaq’s have a “cover switch” which turns things off when the cover is removed .

Now, this switch can either be turned off in BIOS or taped down .

Can’t recall clearly, but I know I had a similar problem with a Compaq and that was all it was .
