317798 2005-01-26 06:58:00 Dual-Layered is basically where there is two layers to the Disc, so it effectively holds 8.5GB IIRC.

There are major extentions to this however, such as Sony's Blu-Ray Disc which allows 25gb.

Back in 1993 however there was a company called C3D which made "FMD Discs". These Fluorescent Multi-layered Discs have a much larger capacity of up to 450Gigs (GB) in some cases.
This is far more than Sony's Blu-Ray 25Gigs.

Basically Sony bought out C3D and "hid" the technology if you will until such a time when suited them. No point in having that sort of storage capacity come into the market and flood your share of DVD Drives etc after all.

Read a bit about C3D here:

I've had the complete opposite experience with the same samsung drive in that it will digest anything and everything with no firmware upgrades. In fact I pulled from my backup and installed it my main drive because of that to replace my gigabyte dvd rw.

Mind you I have had bad runs with some pieces of gear that others swear by so luck of the draw I suppose.
