318002 2005-01-25 18:04:00 I have a compaq, I have not added hardware. The pc was on for a couple of days and I tried to use it. Everything was stuck, no keyboard or mouse, so I had to reboot by turning the pc off. When it came on it was stuck on the windows me screen. I turned it off again and it gave me an option to go to safemode, after typing 2 characters the computer locks up, therefore, I could not get into safemode at all. Now it is a black screen with cursor. I tried to get into the BIOS, but after 2 characters typed it locks up again. I tried booting with a boot disk, but it did not recognize. I heard no beeps when starting. The lights come on. I would throw it out and buy a new one, however, my backup was destroyed by my 3 year old... can anyone help me??? :dogeye: suemom (6995)
318003 2005-01-25 19:19:00 dont worry about your backup it's most likely that the hard drive is ok however you wont know that till you connect it to another pc and check......if the data is still on the hdd then it's a piece of cake to retreive it...........soun'ds to me like maybe something has overheated in your system..........and died..... drcspy (146)

Hmm yer might be something in the registry or startup, but then it could be pretty serious, since safe mode doesnt work either. Turn it off at the wall, if this is a desktop remove the CMOS battery, or get someone to open the case and remove it for about 10 mins then put it back in..

See what happens. If this works, and you can get into the BIOS, you'll have to reconfigure, whatever needs to be fixed, and see if you can use Windows ME then.
