318701 2005-01-27 22:27:00 Hello,

A friend of mine suggested I look for help here .
This morning Norton Antivirus told me I had a virus on my PC when I tried to access Outlook Express . The problem is when I try to follow the instructions for removal on Norton's website I can't! The virus is some sort of Trojan that will let me access the internet but nothing else .

I can't get past step 1 on the instructions, which is to temporarily turn off System Restore . To do this I am told to go into Windows Explorer and get into My Computer properties . As soon as I right click on My Computer and select properties I get an error message that reads:

'Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file . You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item . '

Please help as I have tried everything I can think of!
Paul

*EDIT*

I guess I should have posted the system specs . The PC is a HP pavillion 533a, running Windows XP and Norton Antivirus 2002 .

318702 2005-01-27 22:29:00 Have you tried restarting in safe mode and trying again Overdrive_5000 (4950)
318703 2005-01-27 22:31:00 Try this www.simplysup.com

Download install / update (if u can) and scan.

Whats the name of the trojan??

Try doing system restore in safe mode if u can get into safe mode (Hold F8 down when u boot up).

318705 2005-01-27 22:34:00 If this is your PC that the trojan is on, then click on that link... If not then u need something to take it to your mates coz its bigger than a floppy disk.

Reboot that PC hold down F8 a menu will appear select safe mode.

318706 2005-01-27 22:34:00 Speedy,

Norton gives the name of the virus as Trojan.StartPage

318707 2005-01-27 22:38:00 Ah OK thats NOT an actual trojan its a hijacker.. it hijacks the browser. Click on that link I've given above...and after u scan use the utilities menu 3rd and 4th option. This will reset the home page and reset the hosts file.

Or if he has spybot or adaware, do a scan

318709 2005-01-27 22:46:00 I assume your logged on as a normal user with restriction on what you can do, log out and back on as Administrator. You'll need the admin password handy, of course. Try Control Panel again, if it works reboot to Safe Mode and do your thing. Murray P (44)
318710 2005-01-27 22:49:00 I am logged in as Admin but I cant seem to get to safemode through rebooting.
Can I do it through control panel?
