318678 2005-01-27 21:15:00 What is a wireless Modem? Is it just for wireless broadband or is it a modem that connects to your computer by wirelss?
In other words can I use one to replace my ADSL modem?

318679 2005-01-27 21:23:00 Sometimes it plugs into the phone line to get to the internet, and then distributes it around the house wireless, normally it would be directly connected to a computer as well via a lan cable. Usefull if you have more than one computer to connect up.

I believe there are others that connect up to a wireless internet connection, these are for people that cannot get a connection through the phone line.

318680 2005-01-27 21:25:00 Most of the time they are just 4 wireless broadband, and anyway they are alot more expensive. Overdrive_5000 (4950)
318681 2005-01-27 21:26:00 I would say that it is a wireless access point as well as an ADSL router.
So you could connect your PC directly to one of the 4 network sockets on it or connect to it by using the wireless lan card in your PC.
You should be able to use it to replace your existing ADSL modem BUT I have seen some manufacturers selling Wireless ADSL routers that don't actually include the ADSL modem, just a WAN socket to plug your own ADSL modem in to!

318682 2005-01-28 01:25:00 Jack, how is your setup configured? are your computers plugged into the Modem you already have?
If so, to go wireless, I think you will need a router(wireless ADSL) to connect to your Modem by Ethernet cable ("you can use USB but it is not as good")
then, if you have a wireless LAN card in your computer, you can connect wirelessly to the Router and thence to the WWW.
You will then be free to move your computer almost anywhere in the house and still connect. (Mrs Jack will be most impressed if you take it to bed to catch up on your PF1)
There will be some issues with set up but a man who can change a motherboard should be able to do it. Anyway, there are plenty of experts here to help you.

318683 2005-01-28 02:21:00 Thanks for your reply Rob. At the moment I just have an ADSL modem plugged into a filter. It's working fine but my telephone line is quite noisy. I was just looking at a way to get rid of some wires and hopefuly some noise.
Number 1 wife is complaining about it.

BTW. I'll have you know I successfuly installed an Asus M/B and an Athlon 64 3200+ cpu. And it has been working wonderfuly for a couple of weeks. :p :p

I don't need a modem I can use in bed either. My 19 inch monitor is too heavy to carry upstairs.

318684 2005-01-28 03:04:00 If you still have noise on your phone line, your line could be faulty ring telecom and ask them to preform a noise test on your line this should be free. Overdrive_5000 (4950)

Jack, I followed the saga of your Mobo change. Just kidding you old son.

To get rid of the wires all you need is a router to go with your modem. Check which one is compatible but I have been reading good things about the new belkin-n which runs a a higher speed that a b or g router.
look here catalog.belkin.com
Then check pricespy
