318505 2005-01-27 03:26:00 Hi guys,

I have a problem with installing additional ram in my system.

I have an ASUS motherboard that supports up to 2gb of RAM. I have 3 RAM slots. According to the manual, I can place 1gb in the first slot and a total of another 1gb in the 2nd/3rd slot combined. When I want to install chips in both the 2nd and the 3rd slots, they have to be both single sided. My motherboard supports both 266/333 DDR ram and the ability to be overclocked to support 400 DDR.

Currently i have 2 single sided 256mb 333DDR (brand; Twinbios) ram installed. I want to upgrade this to 1GB instead of the current 512mb.

I bought two identical double sided 512mb Legend 333ddr chips. I placed one in the first slot, and moved the two 256's to the 2nd and 3rd slots (as per specified by the manual). POST recognizes 1GB mem and OS boots fine (I dual boot between Win2k pro and Win2k Advanced Svr). However, after I started a few programs.. the OS started to give me random memory error messages (xxx program has encountered an error). This has NEVER happened before I installed the new ram.

Now as diligent as I am, I went back to my trusty box and removed the two 256mb chips, so now I was running on one 512mb doublesided chip only (this is to test whether the error's caused by a faulty ram chip). System booted properly, and 1 hour passed.. I started as many programs as I could, and system did not give any memory message just like the old days when i had the two 256mb chips.

I replaced the 512mb with the other 512mb and tested.. no error.. everything was fine. so i can be pretty certain both new ram chips are in working order

now I put in both 512mb chips into slot1/2 and restarted the pc. POST recognized this as being 1G ram (which is good) and OS booted successfully. However, same problem occurred. Random memory error.

Now WHAT IS going on? Is it my OS or my motherboard or the RAM?

I will try to install XP home, but is OS really the problem?

318506 2005-01-27 03:53:00 I would use a ram trest program and try all combonations of ram in each slot and such like.

it sounds like a miss match between ram type/speed.
