318267 2005-01-26 08:21:00 I've bought a 1.1ghz PC that was complete except that the previous owner had taken the HDD out when they moved overseas.
I had a 500mhz PC that was running well with Win2K and I chose to take the HDD from this and put it into the faster PC.
I can't boot past the loading win2K window - when it always stops and puts up a blue screen with writing at the top saying: 1) Check HDD for viruses, or 2) Remove HDD, or 3) Reconfigure settings/HDD controllers, etc.

Has anyone experienced this before?
What does it mean?
What do I need to do to make it boot-up to the OS?

Any help greatly appreciated.

318268 2005-01-26 08:32:00 You should not attempt to boot a system on a version of Windows that was not installed on that system. Particularly with 2k or XP.

It's almost always fatal, and does not usually make the boot process.

After all, it is trying to load all the wrong chipset drivers into the motherboard.

318269 2005-01-26 08:33:00 OK,
Windows (esp. 2000 up) doesnt like being switched around from computer from computer.
You actually have to reinstall windows, as windows uses the uniqeid from the major compontents of the computer (motherboard, cpu).

"It's almost always fatal, and does not usually make the boot process."

Do you mean "fatal" in the permanent, i.e. never to be resurrected sense and the HD goes to the tip....or "fatal" in that, say, data will be lost and possibly reformatting and reinstalling the OS will be required?

I got into serious trouble some time back with a hardrive with XP installed that mysteriously died (permant type death I believe) when I moved it to another PC also with XP installed, and tried to make it the second boot HD, and I wonder now if that was what went wrong.

It shouldn't 'kill' the drive, but it will require a format and reinstallation

318272 2005-01-26 17:04:00 before formatting the thing try a 'repair' installation that often works....... drcspy (146)
