318225 2005-01-26 04:08:00 I just attempted to bring life back into an old win98 machine that has been packed in the corner for a year or more...

The original monitor made smoke. BAD MONITOR. I found a substitute replacement monitor and got it to work with one slight problem. I now have a screen full of noise, and no way of seeing what is going on so i can ease off the video settings a bit.

If i had a not so nasty monitor i'd run it so that so i can then see what i'm doing and then prepare the machine so i could go back to the nasty spare monitor. Trouble is, i don't have a spare monitor.
Is there anyway i can get a '98 'doze system to ease of on the video demands using something like a keyboard shortcut during boot up?

318226 2005-01-26 04:12:00 Try getting into Safe Mode during the boot. That should give 640x480 16 colour VGA.

You can probably see when the F8 has worked by the screen appearance, and then a guess on the cursor keys should let select safe mode.

318227 2005-01-26 04:14:00 safe mode.

Then right click the screen and choose properties, then grab the slider,Push it up then back down to the lowest resolution and click apply

I have no idea if you need to move the slider or just click apply,I do it just to be safe.

Look for the monitor tab and lower the refresh to 60hz and press aplly.

Lower the colour settings to 256 and press apply.

Again,no idea if you have to raise and then lower the settings or just hit apply, But ....Hail Cheese.

Or just reboot it until it goes there itself ;)

318229 2005-01-26 04:31:00 Hi personthingy. I did similar, taking the old 98 out of the bottom of the wardrobe so that we could run some older programmes. I had no monitor for it, so got a cheapo data switch which allowed it access to the screen and keyboard used by my XP Pro system. Settings on the 98 are 1024 x 768 pixels and 256 colours. Now both run side by side and it just requires the switch to be thrown. Scouse (83)
318230 2005-01-26 04:38:00 Cool bananas!

I changed the settings using safe mode, and Vanessa the windows box is now alive with the worst monitor possabe!

Yippy!
Thankyou all!

However, switching one monitor between two machines could be a great idea till i have the spare coin to get screen2
