2005-01-28 10:55:00 | I would be interested how many people find UBS bs as I have a friend who is switching over from JS because of his bandwidth being capped - I have warned him about what I have heard in online gaming about 56kers getting better pings than UBSers! The post on Orcon's forums seems pretty full on - I assume you are getting bad speed all round - not just bad latency...

2005-01-28 11:10:00 | Everything I said on the post is true, and I am not just getting bad pings ... ther connection is apalling with international traffics....and I wouldn't have posted if I hadn't suffered with it for so long! | Kenshin (2501) | |
2005-01-28 11:38:00 | The fact of the matter is that you don't know whether it is Orcons fault or Telecoms and I guess you probably don't care, you just want it fixed. Did you really think that telecom was going to give other ISP's a fair go? I believe that this is the guy responsible for your trouble, Ministerial.Office.of.Hon.Paul.Swain@ministers.gov t.nz Email him. Don't think he cares though!

2005-01-28 11:48:00 | I gave up on Orcon a few weeks ago. After shocking 256 adsl pings, then promises of great low latency with UBS and finding that 200 ping was the norm to NZ game servers, and then having so many timeouts when browsing and pop3 timeouts, not to mention the 60.* IP address range that wasn't recognised by a few websites, I went back (with a heavy heart) to Xtra. I now get 40 - 60 ping, even with the kids web browsing or playing the same games concurrently. Downloads at 250 kb/s is heaven, and I don't get timeouts. Regardless of whether it's Telecom messing things up all I want was to enjoy my online time, which involves playing games, which I have now. For an excellent overview of how things go, scroll down to Fobski's post on the Gameplanet BF Forum (www.gpforums.co.nz)

2005-01-28 17:18:00 | Isn't there a $100 fee to change to Xtra? | Greg (193) | |
2005-01-28 18:18:00 | I now see the setup fee is temporarily waived and a free modem kit supplied when joining Xtra. I'm just gonna do it today, soon as I find out if there'll be any interruption to my service. | Greg (193) | |
2005-01-28 21:17:00 | What's Xtra's monthly charge?? And I don't care if its Telecom's fault, I am paying my money to Orcon and they should have it sorted! IF they can't sustain a satisfactory level of service they should not have taken in so many customers . . . and now they are screwed . . and I hope they are too . . . and please do make a post if you feel like . . in the orcons forum .

2005-01-28 21:42:00 | You obviously didn't read some of the posts in the various threads linked to from here. Orcon wasn't prepared to have 700 odd customers dumped on them at once, and it's only fair to assume that no one would expect that to happen. If Telecom did not notify Orcon that they would be getting a whole load of new customers in one go (which it sounds like they didn't), there is no way Orcon could have been prepared. An ISP does not decide to spend money just in case they get 700 new customers at once because that is not a possibility in their day-to-day running. It looks to me like Orcon had no warning about the number of customers they would be getting, so you cannot stand there and accuse them of taking in too many customers. And how many times must it be said that with UBS, Telecom has control over the level of service. You've said you don't care if it's Telecoms fault, which is just stupid. It sounds like all UBS customers are suffering problems, no matter what ISP they are with. In that case, how can you simply state you want to hand your money back to Telecom? You should be lobbying Telecom to provide a fair level of service to the ISPs using UBS.
